On this day 66 years ago, 30th September 1957. The last train on the Enniskillen-Sligo railway line departed from Enniskillen station at 19:30 hrs. The locomotive was the ‘Lough Melvin’.
All along the line, the train was delayed by cheering spectators. At Manorhamilton, Dromahair and Collooney, crowds let off fireworks, while at Ballintogher and Ballygawley, bonfires blazed.
This last train journey brought an end to the era of rail travel through Fermanagh, Cavan, Leitrim and Sligo, which had commenced in 1882.

Sligo really is one of the most under-appreciated counties in Ireland 😍

Imaging moving through the water slowly here with Benbulben looming over you from afar - magic ⛵

🌊 Leitrim Must Do 🌊

RTÉ journalist, author, and explorer Carole Coleman shares her list.

🧘‍♀️ Pilates by the river Shannon 🧘‍♀️

Practicing morning pilates on the Carrick on Shannon boardwalk is an incredible experience. With the gentle current, curious swans, and the sunrise, it feels like walking on water!

☕️ Barista on the Blueway ☕️

Earn your treat at by exploring the Shannon Blueway between Leitrim Village & Kilclare. Stop by the delightful caravan along the canal for hot or cold drinks and baked goodies – a great incentive for teens to walk or cycle!

Discover Europe's Smallest Church, Costello Memorial Chapel in Carrick on Shannon. This work of art and burial chamber, commissioned by Edward Costello for his wife, will leave a lasting impression in just two minutes.

🎶 Geraghty’s – a musical journey 🎶

When I want to relive my childhood I call to Geraghty’s musical instrument store and old curiosity shop in Carrick on Shannon. Don't miss the art deco tiling and the iconic penny-farthing bike! Refuel at Crumbs Café on Bridge Street for the perfect lunch date.

🌅 Sunset strolls at Jamestown Canal 🌅

Seek inspiration with an evening stroll along the Jamestown Canal. It bypasses an unnavigable section of the Shannon and is my perfect thinking spot. Park opposite the old Drumsna train station and follow the canal walk to Albert Lock – ideal for reading or writing a book!

🎭 Catch a show at the Dock Arts Centre 🎭

Experience unforgettable performances at Carrick on Shannon’s intimate Dock Arts Centre. From Allie Blunnie to the local Breffni Players, the shows will raise the roof! Don't forget to explore the free exhibition upstairs and the Leitrim Design gift shop. thedock.ie

To move, to breathe,
To fly, to float,
To gain all while you give,
To roam the roads
Of lands remote,
To travel is to live!

~ Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875)

This road leads to Benwhisken, the northern end of a lengthy broad topped ridge, part of the Gleniff Horseshoe in County Sligo. 🥰
