Join us in for a talk on The Sinking of the Tayleur Sailing Ship, 1854 with Edward J. Bourke

Thursday 16th May, 6.30pm – 7.30pm

The sailing ship Tayleur was wrecked on Lambay 170 years ago on 28th January 1854. Malahide, Skerries and Rush were involved in the story and rescue of the survivors. Edward J. Bourke, author of Bound for Australia: The Loss of the Emigrant Ship Tayleur, will give a talk on this maritime disaster, which claimed the lives of hundreds of people.

Cottage life was simple life

St Brigid day signalled an end to the darkness of winter and ushered in a new season of hope and growth. As such, people celebrated the day with a festive meal and a host of customs, all aimed at securing St Brigid's protection and promise of new life and abundance for the year ahead.

Brigid's Cross (Cros Bríde in Irish) is a cross woven from rushes, with 4 arms tied at the end and meeting in a woven patterned square in the centre. Traditionally they were displayed over the door of a house to ward off evil. The tradition marks the beginning of spring, St Brigid's Day being the 1st February.
