St. Joseph's Secondary School

St. Joseph's Secondary School Golden Jubilee Celebrations

From little acorns great oaks grow! All the more special because the 13 girls were divided between four year groups!

When thirteen students (all girls) began their secondary education in the convent across the road from the present school in 1961, little did they think that 50 years later we would be celebrating our Golden Jubilee as a school of 500 plus, meeting the needs of the entire community in Rush. As a school that moves with the times, and recognising the need to provide an education for the boys of Rush

, St Joseph’s became a co-educational school in 1981. It is a privilege to be principal of the school during the Golden Jubilee following the footsteps of Tom Loughnane, Sr Caitriona O’Hara(1983), Sr Kathleen O’Keefe(1975), Ms Teresita Durkan (1972), And Sr Patricia Finucane(1961). They have all left their mark on the character of the school leading committed and dedicated staff. A feature of St Joseph’s has been the close contact between past pupils of the school and the local community. My thanks in advance to those members of the Golden Jubilee Committee for their work in celebrating the life of the school and showcasing the school today.

2011 is a very special year for the St Joseph’s Community and our celebrations begin with the visit of President Mary McAleese on 28 January 2011. We are honoured that the President has found time in her busy schedule to launch our celebrations. In September we will hold a special Mercy Day Mass to mark the beginning of the academic year. Past pupils will be welcome to attend this very important day in tWe have planned many other events including:
· An Open Evening when past pupils can meet up with old friends, teachers and Sisters of Mercy
· A book celebrating ’50 Years of Golden Memories’
· Quiz
· Golf Classic
· Trad Session and Ceile
· Pamper Night
· Sculpture
· Christmas Carols

As you can see from the above, we want to provide past pupils with as many opportunities to visit the school and reminisce with old friends and colleagues. The Parents Association (many of whom are past pupils) is keen to set up an exhibition of memorabilia. Please drop anything of interest into the office with your name and contact details so that the items can be returned to you after the exhibition. Please leave your name, the year you started at St Joseph’s and your email address so that we can keep you posted about up coming events. Use our page to keep up to date with other past pupils.

Parents and guardians, please check TYRO, our school app. A lot of information was sent out today. A letter containing important information about the new Junior Cycle Book Scheme and how it will work for students in St Joseph’s was sent to all parents and guardians of incoming 1st Years (by email) and to parents and guardians of students starting in 2nd and 3rd Year in the next academic year. The letter details the books, workbooks, classroom materials, exam papers, stationery and copies we will be purchasing for your child and how the scheme will work. Parents and guardians of students starting into TY received a letter about books too. A further letter was sent to all parents and guardians with information about next year and a summary of some of our highlights since Christmas in St Joseph’s - BT Young Scientist, our ‘Let’s Read’ programme, our immersion programme in Uganda with Aidlink, our 2nd Year language trip to Madrid and Salamanca, our Jigsaw, Pieta House and CFES School of Distinction awards, TY work experience programme in Santiago de Compostela in Spain, TY trip to Barcelona, 5th Years walking El Camino de Santiago, SciFest, our Leinster Cricket champions, our Ember Team, our visitors from Germany, Emmanuel, Gaisce, three of our teachers becoming authors in 2024, our 2nd Year Scholars Ireland programme with Trinity, Green Schools and our European Parliament Ambassador programme. Una semana increíble con un grupo increíble 🇪🇸 Our 2nd Years are back in Dublin after spending one week immersing themselves in Spanish language and culture! Staying in Salamanca, the students attended Spanish classes in La Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, Spain’s oldest university. When they weren’t in class, the focus was on culture, which included visiting the Cathedral of Salamanca, a walking tour of the city, a treasure hunt around Salamanca’s main square, Plaza Mayor, Flamenco, Bachata and Salsa dance classes, a cookery class on how to make Tortilla Española and a tapas tour, sampling some typical dishes! We took a day trip to the medieval cities of Segovia and Avila, exploring their ancient sites. When in Madrid, the students got to visit the Royal Palace, El Templo de Debod, Las Rozas and Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the home of Real Madrid! Well done to the students who were simply fantastic and embraced every moment of the experience and we hope it has ignited their interest in learning Spanish 🇪🇸

In order to promote an interest in reading for pleasure and help our students to develop their literacy skills, all of our 1st and 2nd Year students are taking part in a month-long reading challenge unique to St Joseph’s called ‘Let’s Read’. Students got to select a book of their choice from a catalogue put together by teachers on our literacy team. 20 minutes per day is allocated to reading their books over the four weeks. The students are half way through the initiative and made some very good choices! It’s great to see them enjoying their books and talking about them. Our TY students are currently selecting their books as they will be taking part in the initiative after the February Midterm break 📚📚📚
