St. Joseph's Secondary School Golden Jubilee Celebrations

From little acorns great oaks grow! All the more special because the 13 girls were divided between four year groups!

When thirteen students (all girls) began their secondary education in the convent across the road from the present school in 1961, little did they think that 50 years later we would be celebrating our Golden Jubilee as a school of 500 plus, meeting the needs of the entire community in Rush. As a school that moves with the times, and recognising the need to provide an education for the boys of Rush

, St Joseph’s became a co-educational school in 1981. It is a privilege to be principal of the school during the Golden Jubilee following the footsteps of Tom Loughnane, Sr Caitriona O’Hara(1983), Sr Kathleen O’Keefe(1975), Ms Teresita Durkan (1972), And Sr Patricia Finucane(1961). They have all left their mark on the character of the school leading committed and dedicated staff. A feature of St Joseph’s has been the close contact between past pupils of the school and the local community. My thanks in advance to those members of the Golden Jubilee Committee for their work in celebrating the life of the school and showcasing the school today.

2011 is a very special year for the St Joseph’s Community and our celebrations begin with the visit of President Mary McAleese on 28 January 2011. We are honoured that the President has found time in her busy schedule to launch our celebrations. In September we will hold a special Mercy Day Mass to mark the beginning of the academic year. Past pupils will be welcome to attend this very important day in tWe have planned many other events including:
· An Open Evening when past pupils can meet up with old friends, teachers and Sisters of Mercy
· A book celebrating ’50 Years of Golden Memories’
· Quiz
· Golf Classic
· Trad Session and Ceile
· Pamper Night
· Sculpture
· Christmas Carols

As you can see from the above, we want to provide past pupils with as many opportunities to visit the school and reminisce with old friends and colleagues. The Parents Association (many of whom are past pupils) is keen to set up an exhibition of memorabilia. Please drop anything of interest into the office with your name and contact details so that the items can be returned to you after the exhibition. Please leave your name, the year you started at St Joseph’s and your email address so that we can keep you posted about up coming events. Use our page to keep up to date with other past pupils.

In an effort to encourage sustainability and to reduce the cost of purchasing school uniforms, we are holding our annual Uniform Drive for this year. We would be delighted to receive donations of any St Joseph’s uniform items that you no longer need for your child (jackets, jumpers, trousers, skirts, tracksuit bottoms, tracksuit tops, tracksuit t-shirts and shirts). If donating them, we would kindly ask that the items are in good condition and washed beforehand. You can drop items off to the school office from tomorrow, Thursday 12th June right up until Wednesday 25th June 2025 between the hours of 9am and 3:30pm. In August, in advance of the new term, we will hold a Uniform Shop for anyone who would like to avail of the donated uniforms and we will send information about this in early August. We would greatly appreciate your support with any donations over the coming days.

Our TYs had a fantastic time during their week long visit to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where they received a very cultural and immersive experience! Attending school in our partner school, Colegio San José de Cluny and staying with host families, the TYs attended classes daily where they helped out in English classes, visited famous museums and sites including the Cathedral, got to try lots of typical food including pulpo (octopus) and churros con chocolate, practise their Spanish and made new friends! Huge thanks to the school and host families for the very warm welcome and care 🇪🇸🇮🇪

Back in January, all 1st, 2nd and 4th Year students, as well as our LCA classes, took part in a month long reading programme we call ‘Let’s Read’, where 30 minutes a day was allocated to reading a book of their choice from our library! Over 60 of our 1st Years took on a further challenge of ‘Let’s Read’, but this time at home, with a target of two books before the Summer holidays! As a result of this intervention and the January programme, lots of our students have engaged with a more positive attitude towards reading for pleasure and have felt the success of finishing a book, or books in the case of a large number of them 📚 Certificates and prizes were handed out during a celebration, with lots of fantastic book reviews submitted by the 1st Years! Well done to all and keep on reading - we’ll have lots of new books added to our reading corners over the summer for next year!

On Thursday, we marked the retirement of Home Economics teacher Ms Margaret McGuire from
St Joseph’s and celebrated the time she has been with us in the school. Ms McGuire’s kindness, positivity and glamour will be sorely missed around the building, by both staff and students and we all wish her well as she begins a new chapter in her life! Congratulations and thank you Ms McGuire 💐

We had a lovely day with our 6th Year students today, which began with one final meal in the school hall - a celebratory breakfast providing everyone with an opportunity to sit and chat with the friends they’ve grown up with over their time in St Joseph’s. We then went to Mass in St Maur’s Church where Father Paul gave the group a blessing, not just for their upcoming exams but as they move into the next phase of their lives! The students then went on a final school tour to bowling with their Year Head Ms Lynch and the team of Form Teachers who have supported and guided the students over the past number of years! We’re looking forward to their Graduation Ceremony tomorrow evening 🎓🎓🎓
