Palm Bay Frost: Format: CD + Download/Stream, 10 Tracks, Release: 01.03.2023, Label: Herztöne (LC 85239). Folk World Irish Scottish.

"How did you come up with such a band name?" the band is regularly asked, but it is quite simple. It is the surnames of the three members: Sabrina Palm (fiddle, backing vocals), Simon Bay (accordion, backing vocals) and Hartmut Frost (guitar, vocals). In the middle of the Corona pandemic, the three came together as a trio in Cologne, Germany. Now they present their debut album, for which they were able to win such guest musicians as Michael McGoldrick (flute and whistle) and Eamon Murray (bodhrán).

Mainly original songs and instrumental pieces, musically located between Ireland/Scotland, BalFolk and America, form the repertoire of the debut. The music is characterised by the trio's experiences, and everyday observations or reflections on their own lives. Hartmut Frost wrote the three songs on the album and except for two traditional Irish tunes, Sabrina Palm and Simon Bay wrote all the instrumental pieces.

The music was recorded and mixed by producer Jan Niemeyer at the renowned Soulvision Studio in Cologne. The mastering was done by Kai Blankenberg from Skyline Tonfabrik in Düsseldorf, who has also worked for stars like Lady Gaga. The album is available as CD or download and can be listened to on all known streaming platforms.

An accompanying sheet music edition is available from Verlag der Spielleute and in bookshops: ISBN 978-3-943060-23-2.

US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Proposes Fee Increases for Visas

The Irish Diaspora in America is one of the largest of all countries, with estimates of up to 36.3 million Americans descended from Irish immigrants. Irish music, dance, customs and traditions, have become infused in the US. Families travel from all across the US to attend well over 200 annual weekend festivals of Irish music, culture and dance. Each of these festivals attract tens of thousands of guests, adding to the local economies while growing and maintaining a vibrant cultural exchange bridging the Celtic world and the US.

But the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is actually threatening these events to the point of extinction. The DHS is proposing a 260 percent increase in filing fees for regularly-priced O visa performers from $460 to $1,655 per petition. Similarly and just as inhibiting, filing fees for regularly-processed P visa petitions would increase by 251 percent from $460 to $1,615 per petition. These increases are intended to “provide services to applicants and petitioners (and to) be able to keep pace with (the) incoming benefit request workload and (improve the) USCIS processing backlogs.”

The USCIS wasn’t created to make money for the Federal government but rather to uphold America’s promise as a nation of welcome and possibility with fairness, integrity, and respect for all they serve. USCIS mission statement.

While some fee increases are understandable and almost predictable, more than doubling already significant fees to perform in the US flies in the face of reason.

The Fourth Annual Gulf Coast Cruinniú will be held in Houston, TX, June 2-4, 2023. The Cruinniú is an exciting weekend of instruction, concerts, sessions, and presentations.

We are proud to announce our world class Instructors: Katie Geringer (intro to fiddle), Caitlin Warbelow (fiddle), Cara Wildman (bodhran), Seán Gavin (flute), John Doyle (guitar), Theresa O’Grady (tenor banjo/mandolin), Sue Richards (harp), Michael Stribling (uilleann pipes), Máirtín De Cógáín (storytelling), and Angelika Eleni Ruiz (sean-nós dance).

This year we are offering storytelling to tap into a rich but sometimes overlooked part of Irish culture. This allows us to offer a class for students who do not dance or play an instrument.

The Cruinniú weekend includes 6.25 hours of instruction over Saturday and Sunday, as well as “Irish Journeys” (aka special presentations) related to Irish culture. On Saturday evening, there will be an exciting concert featuring our stellar line-up of instructors. Finally, sessions at various skill levels will be held throughout the weekend and will provide a knee-to-knee experience, passing on the traditions of Irish music.

Please join us and be part of the Gulf Coast Cruinniú, a premier “gathering” on the traditional Irish Music calendar.

The Houston-based Cruinniú is a project of the non-profit School of Irish Music.

Acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Bernadette Morris is set to release her highly anticipated new album To the Well for Water on May 5th 2023, ten years on from her first album release.
