What can we learn from Brigid in the 21st century?

Organisers of the Brigid of Faughart Festival, Roisin Cotter and Maura Lennon, explain the legacy of our matron saint Brigid ahead of Lá Fhéile Bríde. 👇

“Brigid sits in a lot of different spheres. She was the bridge between her father who was part of the old religion, and her mother who was a Christian. She was also the bridge between the rich, as her father was rich, and the poor, because her mother was a slave.”

“That’s why her story is such an amazing one, she came from that and yet went on to become the most important woman in Ireland and probably Europe at the time. She was the head of a monastery.”

For more about the history and birthplace of Brigid, make sure to pick up this week’s Irish Country Living.

So many wonderful events taking place as part of 𝗖𝗲𝐥𝗲𝗯𝐫𝗮𝐭𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝐁𝐫𝗶𝗴𝗶𝐝 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 including this 'Lecture on St. Brigid at the countymuseumdundalk'

An illustrated talk on St. Brigid will be held at the County Museum, Dundalk this Friday at 2.30 p.m. Entitled 'The Archaeology and Artefacts associated with St Brigid of Faughart' the talk will be given by Dr. Alison Lennon.

According to Dr. Lennon “Faughart is so deeply associated with St Brigid. I’ll be highlighting the archaeological monuments on Faughart Hill including St Brigid's church, well, pillar and bed. I’ll also analyse the origins and legends regarding artefacts associated with her such as crosses, Brídeog dolls, Brat Bríde and bullaun stones.”

Museum Curator, Brian Walsh, added “Over the course of the last number of years the country has seen a renewal of interest in St. Brigid and her life. This lecture will be a strong reminder of Brigid’s life and as importantly, her birthplace. We’re extremely fortunate in the Museum to have a collection of her crosses on display which speak to her legacy and continued relevance to this day. Moreover, we’re delighted to have Dr. Lennon speak on a subject with such a strong local significance.”

Admission to the lecture is free but prior booking is recommended +353 42 9392999.

They said it was going to be epic, enchanting, and unforgettable, and that is exactly what it was! The Northern Lights – Brigid 1500 was a huge success in 2024, attracting visitors traveling from an 80+ kilometer radius to join in the celebrations for St. Brigid of Faughart in Dundalk.

Taking place this year on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd of February, the final preparations are underway to create another unique and unforgettable audio-visual show to commemorate the life and legacy of St. Brigid.

The spectacular lighting shows will take place between 6pm and 7pm each evening at Market Square and all are invited to come along and join in the celebrations.

“The Northern Lights – Celebrating Brigid is a monumental attraction befitting the Matron Saint of Ireland, this installation features up to 200 thousand individual points of light and unique decorative symbols exclusively designed to represent the spirit of Brigid. Inspiration for the visual concept came directly from the iconic Brigid of Faughart mural created by Irish artist Friz in Dundalk in 2020, it has continued to inspire us in countless ways and was central to this design.” said TCCM Manager Martin McElligott.

Do not miss The Northern Lights – Celebrating Brigid Festival this Bank Holiday weekend as these awe-inspiring light shows illuminate the night sky creating an unforgettable audio-visual experience that is free of charge and a must see for all ages!

This festival is proudly brought to you by Louth County Council and Dundalk Town.
