Disturbing to read all the insulting comments on social media directed towards the casualty rescued from O’ Shea’s gulley yesterday.. In a rescue situation the dignity of the casualty is paramount , and I’m sure volunteers in the rescue services are always aware of that.. Those type of comments from self righteous keyboard warriors do nothing to encourage someone in difficulty to make that call, for fear of being ridiculed. Well done to Kerry Mountain Rescue .

Climbing Mt Blanc. By Michael Whelan .

Mountaineer and expedition leader Michael Whelan will deliver a talk entitled Climbing Mt Blanc at Central Arts 123A Parade Quay Waterford on Thursday December 10th at 8pm.The talk will also feature images and short video clips.

Over the past 12 years Michael has attempted Mt Blanc several times, both expedition style (self supporting, food, tent and so on) and Alpine style ( using the refuge huts) summiting 4 times. Most memorably in 2008 when he along with 3 lads from Waterford, sat out a storm for 3 days in a small tent at 3800m before reaching the summit.

Tickets €8.00 from www.centralarts.ie

HEATWAVE CLOSES MONT BLANC. .The Mayor of St Gervais has decided to close the new Goutier Refuge and Guides say it’s now too dangerous to cross the infamous Grand Couloir as rock fall becomes more frequent due to melting ice This is only the second time in history when the route was officially closed. The last time was during the heatwave of August 2003. We crossed the Couloir on July 4th and 7th before it closed. One member of our group had a lucky escape when a slab of stone the size af a phone book landed next to his leg, showering him with a cloud of snow. When we arrived safely back at the Tete Rousse refuge on July 7th,we looked back in horror at what looked like truck loads of rocks tumbling down the Grand Couloir knowing scores of climbers were trying to cross. The casualty list for Mont Blanc is shocking. Don’t know the stats for 2015 but 2 Russian climbers died on the Couloir on July 1st The decision to close in 2003 came after 5 climbers died in one day alone crossing the Couloir
The French are very capable of building a 100m tunnel under the Grand Couloir. So why don’t they ?Well , its almost like a barrier for the mountain. If they bypassed it, it would allow a lot of armature climbers onto Mt Blanc, resulting in a much higher volume of casualties and rescues
