When I had my first baby, I knew I wanted to breastfeed but had no other knowledge beyond that. The learning curve was very steep in those early weeks, but once I got the hang of it I thought breastfeeding was the best thing ever! I went on to train as a voluntary breastfeeding counsellor, and ran a group in Ennis for 12 years. During that time I trained many other breastfeeding supporters, served

on the National Council, and worked on learning all I could learn about breastfeeding and everything that goes with it. I sat my Lactation Consultant exam in 2010 and passed with flying colours! My practice now involves meeting mothers both in clinic and also in their homes, depending on what a mother needs. I have helped mothers with pain, weight and milk supply concerns, latching, feeding twins, prematurity, and tongue tie -- for starters! My aim is to support mums to have the breastfeeding experience they would like to have, however that may work best for them. A consult takes between 1.5-2 hours and in that time we usually have an excellent idea of the issues and also have made a good plan together to get them sorted. I am also very pleased to be teaching Clare Boyle's Preparation for Breastfeeding class in Limerick every month, which is a wonderful and enjoyable way for parents-to-be to get ready for the birth of their babies! http://breastfeedingconsultant.ie/index.php/services/breastfeeding-classes/

A clinic visit costs €100, and home visits from €120 depending on distance (I am based between Ennis and Limerick). Receipts are provided as many private health insurance policies will reimburse part of the fee for lactation support. 🗣It’s and this week gives everyone the opportunity to learn about why black babies are at risk.

🗣There is a disturbingly high black infant mortality rate. Black babies are dying at twice the rate(in some places, nearly triple) the rate of white babies.

🗣According to the CDC, increased breastfeeding/chestfeeding among black parents could decrease infant mortality rates by as much as 50%.

🗣Research shows 57% of Black parents initiate breastfeeding/ chestfeeding. The average duration is 6.4 weeks. By six months, only 35.3% of Black families are still nursing.

🗣Black families are not supported properly in the delicate time immediately following birth to establish a healthy nursing relationship. They return to work sooner to jobs that do not adequately accommodate a nursing parent. And still, racism exists, hurting and hindering the nursing relationship even further. There’s also stigma, not enough resources available, not enough support from their loved ones, and outside stressors along with other challenges.

🗣Formula is also pushed more on black families than any other race. They are 9 times more likely to be given formula than white parents.

🗣We need more representation, support, resources, information, and images of black families nursing, and to stop racism. We have to be aware.

🗣This is a matter of health and saving lives.

Your milk is mostly water, so in the hot weather baby may ask to breastfeed more often. Additional water is not needed, just more breastfeeding! Make sure you stay well hydrated yourself, by keeping a cool drink nearby and enjoying juice fruits and other foods which provide hydration and nutrition. 😎😎😎

I have been saying this for many years: If you are experiencing breast pain, redness and swelling PLEASE DO NOT : use heat compresses, DO NOT massage your breast with a lot of force, DO NOT use any massagers or suction cups on your breast. It will increase SWELLING AND INFLAMMATION. Use cold compresses, VERY GENTLE: Breast Gymnastics and Therapeutic Breast massage toward lymph nodes, nursing your baby or hand expression. Reach out to your IBCLC or Breastfeeding Medicine doctor. SLOW DOWN AND GET SOME REST!! Be KIND to your breast and to yourself❤️🤱🏿🤱🏻🤱❤️

I would say that 90% of the behavioural, sleep and eating problems I’m asked to help with on a daily basis are developmentally appropriate and entirely normal. Ie: babies acting like babies, toddlers acting like toddlers and so on. The problem this presents is that very often there is no magic solution. Because you can’t fix something that isn’t broken and you can’t speed development and make a child act in ways that are far too mature for their age.

This presents two difficulties for me - how to break this bad news without seeming patronising and/or dismissive and uncaring (something I worry about constantly!) and how to help parents cope with the realisation that the only real answer to their concern is time and patience. .

Our world is obsessed with quick fixes, life hacks and revolutionary solutions. These just don’t exist in parenting though - whatever the ‘problem’. The only real thing we have control over is ourselves. We can’t make our baby or toddler (or even teenager!) behave like an adult, but *we* can be the adult! We can change ourselves. We can take a breath and control our responses, we can make simple changes to avoid tricky situations, we can compromise and we can contain big emotions and difficult behaviour, we can also clear up the ‘mess’ after (be that physical or emotional), we can take better care of ourselves, we can ask for help and we can reset our expectations. This last point is the (frustratingly) real answer to most of the issues parents face. .
