On this day in 1916, journalist and pacifist Francis Sheehy Skeffington was executed by firing squad in Portobello Barracks, Rathmines. Skeffington was a Home Ruler and did not support the Easter Rebellion, believing that civil disobedience was more effective than rebellion.
During Easter week, Skeffington attempted to prevent looting in the city and intended to create a citizen’s police force to restore order. On Tuesday evening, as he was returning home to Rathmines from handing out leaflets, he was detained and the following morning unlawfully executed. His wife, Hanna, was unaware of his arrest and ex*****on as she was in the GPO providing food and support. Later, Hanna refused £10,000 compensation and sought a court martial for Captain Bowen Colthurst who was responsible for the death of her husband.
