Gay Byrne was a true legend and everyone who witnessed his shows over the years will testify to that.
Be it on TV, with the compulsive Late Late Show viewing (1962-1999) in which he challenged many of the controversial issues confronting Ireland during those years.
His GB Show RTE Radio 1(1972-1999), was just as compulsive as his listeners phoned in there woes and wee stories to Gay and later on Joe Duffy.
Whilst he did other shoes after his 'retirement', the above shows are the ones that he is best remembered for.
Gay held the heart of the nation for many years during the times when Ireland was changing times , and he was there to explore all those issues and discuss them openly and shine a new light on this country's changing attitudes.
We all have to say a BIG 'thank you Gay' and there will never be anyone quite like you again!
May you rest in peace !
