The Beara peninsula is less popular than nearby honeypots such as the Ring of Kerry – and all the better for it, says Philip Watson, who discovers rugged scenery, stone circles and great little bars

BEARA... NAMED AFTER A WOMAN!

In the early centuries AD, Owen Mór, King of Ireland, married Princess Beara, the daughter of a Spanish King and he named the whole peninsula 'Beara' in honour of his new bride. According to legend, she's buried here in a remote and peaceful valley.

The northern part of Beara is in County Kerry, while the rest is in County Cork, and the Ring of Beara is a gorgeous driving route that circumnavigates the whole peninsula. It covers around 90 miles and I'd go as far as to say I prefer it to the Ring of Kerry... less crowded in the summer and more unspoiled. Here are a few more reasons why you might like to visit Beara....

It's is officially the warmest place in Ireland ... the highest waterfall anywhere in Ireland and the UK is here ... the oldest writing on a stone in Ireland is here ... the second safest natural harbour in the world is here ... it has the highest number of antiquities in any one area in Ireland ... the only cable car in Ireland goes from here ... it's home to the oldest oak trees in Ireland, the tallest birch tree in Ireland, one of Ireland's rarest birds (the chough) and the tallest Ogham stone in the world!

Sure why wouldn't ya? 😁
