Hanne's Cottage

Hanne's Cottage Nordic 'hygge' and overnight stays in a traditional Irish cottage in the heart of the Burren. Hanne’s Cottage is an experience. It is accommodation with soul.

It is simple, it is quiet and it is real. It is nestled on an edenic plot of land; an ARK = Act of Restorative Kindness towards the Earth www.wearetheark.org ; managed for wildlife and therefore beautifully 'messy' and brimming with life. It is surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Caher Valley in the Burren, Co. Clare. On days of mist and sideways rain, the stove is lit and the kettle on.

Hanne will be your host during your stay, sharing the hearth of her cottage with you. It is tidy and clean but will bear evidence of being a fully lived-in home. She is a quiet soul; perceptive of your needs and respectful of your space. Suitable for one or two people traveling together. (Can maybe at a little extra cost, squeeze in three people travelling together, if two of you don't mind sharing a double bed.) Bookings by request and all inquiries please connect through the contact form on www.hannescottage.com .

The time has come to dive deeper into the world of the arts and photography.

For creative solitude and winter still.

It's in the details...

On our daily walk in the garden of wild and little woodland.

Finding such heartwarming beauty and peace seeing how the green shield beetles have made small homes in this, about to wither, wildflower (I don't know the name of it). Every single flower on this plant had green shield beetles nestled in them.

"A very nice meeting with a beautiful person Hanne is attentive and attentive to your needs. Her home is an exceptional haven lost in the heart of greenery. Positive vibes will benefit you from pausing time and inviting you to regenerating relaxation (by the corner of a wood fire, if the weather is right). No doubt it is the result of the particular history that connects this host to her home. A unique place like we rarely found it. We fully recommend this stop for those who would like to establish exchanges beyond the sole setting of the holiday accommodation. Beautiful memories as far as we are concerned." Hanne's Cottage is new to Airbnb but it has had a beautiful start of 5 star reviews.

Below from recent wonderful guests, Joshua & Emma

"Staying with Hanne was magical. We were welcomed into her home with a hug and immediately felt at home and part of her family. she invited us her home and hobbies straight away! she is a great communicator and an easy person to spend time with. I can understand why some ay not want to share a house with the owner, this is not the trip for everyone, but for us sharing our trip with Hanne was a fantastic experience. if you are a lover of the outdoors, nature, philosophy or just meeting new and interesting people this is the stay for you! oh and the cottage is beautiful as well!
Thank you Hanne"

"Sweet little cottage only a stone's throw from all the best bits of the Burren including Doolin and the Burren Perfumery. Hanne was an excellent host who put us at ease and let us do our own thing. She even put our clothes in the dryer after we got drenched on a walk. Fluffy the cat is a delight too. We loved the Danish decor and the beds were super comfortable.'" Derbhla (5 Star Review)

This is one of the windows at Hanne’s Cottage. All windows have small drawings or writings on them... why? To protect the birds.

If you wish to prevent (or at least reduce considerably) birds colliding with your windows, this is a simple (and fun) idea:
Write a poem, a quote, a song or make a drawing directly on the window.

It works!

(I'm using an easy to wipe off white marker)

The amount of birdlife around Hanne's Cottage is phenomenal, and it is fledgeling season. One glance out the window, and I see juvenile robins, dunnocks, a black bird eating a slug, a bullfinch couple munching on ripe wildflowers and sorel, chaffinches, goldfinches and little wrens and willow warblers.

This wild flower has found its way here to Hanne's Cottage on its own accord. And the chiff chaff's loves it (or are they willow warblers?) There are two, can you see them?

At times, there were three of them climbing around on it. This is photographed through the kitchen window, I so wish I had a better lens however the feeling of the moment is there. What you can't see is all the other birds within a few meters.of this beautiful wild flower; bullfinches, chaffinches and fledged robins.

Anyone knows the name of this wildflower?

Hanne's Cottage is an ever unfolding ARK = Act of Restorative Kindness towards the Earth. Learning by the day how to be at service for nature.

During the summer of Covid Hanne's Cottage was for a few hours, transformed into a beautiful little music venue.

Exactly three years ago to the day; 7th June 2020 Luka Bloom gave an online concert from the Hearth of the house at Hanne's Cottage.

It was a beautiful thing to do during such surreal times; organised by a small group of friends.

Some things have changed since; the house is now white and the land is wilder, managed at the bare minimum in order to create a sanctuary for small and bigger creatures alike that lives wild and free. How I love it wild!

Please take your time to go through each photograph. There might be snippets of information new to you.

The sun is setting over the Burren mountains, throwing in a bit of evening mist for atmospheric value. Deep shade enters the Caher Valley, birds singing their last notes before everything becomes still and just there, at the threshold of day and dusk, the faint sounds of the long eared owls takes over the tunes for the night to follow.

It's a humble blessing being a guardian of this natural wild place.

On a sunny May morning (yes, although rare, they happen) signs of spring is everywhere in this little ever unfolding ARK (Act of Restorative Kindness towards the Earth) managed for wildlife with pathways cut for mammals to walk along and robins and blackbirds do enjoy those cut parts too. So much birdsong all around. And the occasional mistletrush not so impressed by visiting sparrowhawks. Brimming with life also means attracting natural predators.

Only a few km down the road from Hanne's Cottage, you will find one of the most spectacular gardens. In fact, it is more than a garden. It is an enchanted world of its own. It is magical. It is a work of art and genius craftsmanship. And it is brimming with wildlife.

If you are in this area, don't miss out on this spectacular place and space and the many stories that goes with it that Carl so generously shares.

23/04/2023

At the core and very forefront of Hanne's Cottage is the wildlife surrounding it.

The land that is part of Hanne's Cottage is shared with a deep care allowing a sanctuary, a home, for wildlife to unfold undisturbed. All work that needs done is scheduled in such a way that it doesn't disturb the breeding and nesting. If anything doesn't get done before nesting season, it must wait till another year. There is nothing more important to do in this world than kindness and awareness. Towards each other and towards nature. We are nature too.

The feedback you get from nature by embracing 'the mess' is the most rewarding and life giving feedback possible.

Today I saw the first winter adult yellowhammer couple I've seen in the 4 years here, munching on daisies and dandelions together with a bunch of bullfinch and gold finch couples. 'Mess' is brimming with life. I simply can't recommend enough!

Not to mention; I actual had a hoopoe walking up and down my driveway a few days ago!! If you google it, hoopoe's have never been recorded in Co. Clare before. They are extremely rare! It most likely got blown off track on its migratory route, yet that it should land in this particular ever unfolding little sanctuary for wildlife, I take that as an extraordinary feedback and significant sign.
Embrace the mess.

Embrace the Mess!
We are losing the magic in the world, in ourselves. We are trained to see wildness in our gardens as messy and lazy, to see neatness as proof of our care. Neatness in nature equals barrenness (or something closely resembling it). A neat garden holds very little diversity of life. There is no magic in a tidy wall-to-wall carpet of lawn and non-native plants. Hope cannot be found in those spaces; sanctuary is not available. The intricate and interdependent relationships that exist among many native plants, fungi, insects, and other creatures are not respected or given room. ARKing land allows life to thrive once more. …

Are you a writer?

You have two rooms during your stay; a bedroom and your own livingroom with a couch-bed and stove. A little desk has now been added to your space (chair will be provided too ;) ) It can easily be moved to the window, if you prefer to look out the window to allow perhaps inspiration from nature to allow creativity to flow easier..

The wifi is now great! (Apart from very brief intermittent moments, which is to be expected in Ireland, particularly in rural Ireland...)

These brief moments with this little bluetit are creating timeless memories of joy and gratitude.

I care deeply about nature and wildlife. I always want to do more. The first step within reach are to make Hanne's Cottage into an ever unfolding ARK = Act of Restorative Kindness towards the Earth. I am learning every day how to enhance the habitat for wildlife on this little beautiful plot of land to help smaller and bigger creatures to have shelter, natural food sources and a home to nest and rest.

It is such an immense joy to be given the opportunity to host such wonderful guests that somehow seems to find Hanne's Cottage. Through word of mouth. Or my photography. Or work I've done with other artists. Or.... I trust in this way.

Here's another beautiful review from a recent guest:

« I really enjoyed my stay at Hanne’s cottage. There is a stillness to the cottage that is rare to find. Hanne is a great host, an interesting person and I immensely enjoyed my conversations with her. I really appreciated the art work in the house and it was lovely to have a room to myself to read and relax....
