🚌 CLARE BUS 🚌

A breakthrough at last - The National Transport Authority (NTA) have agreed to enter mediation with Clare Bus. Clare Bus allege that money is owed to them since last summer and this was a barrier to them entering into new contracts with the NTA in March.

I’ve been working closely with Clare Bus management and my colleague Cllr.Pat Hayes on this issue for a long time now. Fingers crossed we are nearing a resolution!

Other voices: another passenger wrote to the politicians to have his say (John M.)

"Hi,

I write to your office this evening regarding the recent antics of the national transport authority regarding Clare bus, this organisation really needs to be held to account on this matter and the treatment of what is a charitable organisation , not for profit organisation, firstly the reduction of funding has backed the company into an unsustainable position whereby they couldn't sign the recently won contract for local link services across Clare, even though they have a much proven record of providing these services across the county for two decades now, this treatment has not only in my view already led to a diminished service ,but has put 23 very valuable jobs on the line, this nta needs to be brought to task on the intimidating bullying behaviour it employs , also on the fact that it has stated that all vehicles used by new operators are accessible, this I can assure you is a blatant lie, I have encountered 3 buses so far with the new operator on my route, two of which are not accessible, the third which is accessible seems to be in very poor mechanical condition in my opinion, grinding noises from back axles which shouldn't be there, and a less than desirable gearbox , gears slipping, ,also I notice how unlike Clare bus ,there is no opportunity to do things like you could with Clare bus, for example run into a nearby shop for a pint of milk after work if you need to, it's a very diminished point a to point b service, Even today a non accessible vehicle was used,

I am asking all recently elected representatives for county Clare to do anything they can to return the local link services to the people who have done it for almost two decades now, the people we know we can trust to do it, I personally think it is very unfair of an authority who actually has existed for less time than Clare bus itself to do this, they obviously have absolutely no understanding of Clare bus as they have never even been seen travelling on any service to see how it works,

Regards and stay safe

"Good Evening All,

As you are aware locals in the Clare area have lost what is considered a vital service. Clare bus has provided a fantastic service to locals in the area for many years. Founded in Feakle a rural village it has provided employment for many locals in the east Clare area. I'm now living in Dublin but when I was based back at home I was a regular user of this service either to get to work in Scariff, travel to Ennis and or use it as a connecting service to head into Dublin. Nowadays I may only use this service 3 or 4 times a year. It was great as I could ring a few hours before travel and be guaranteed a seat on the bus. What always struck me was the level of service this provided. I payed €5 to get from Feakle to Ennis. Working in Dublin I pay more in a daily bus fare to travel to and from work for me its a daily commute of under 10 kms. On top of what is an economical service having raised €1 million in capital is the friendly face that the bus drivers offer as they help people get on the bus, help people with their shopping and know each individual by name. This is a service that has offered a lifeline to many people with disabilities allowing them to lead a life where they can get out of their home and interact with others. It angers me to see that something like this can just be pulled at the drop of a hat and suddenly a caretaker service come in where drivers without knowledge are now providing the service and missing out on collecting passengers. On top of this Clare Bus have a fleet of fully wheelchair and low floored buses that allow people access them easily. A service that would be much sought after across the country.

We are under no mistake that we are in unusual times now and it holds an uncertain future for us all. It is also tinged with sadness that a service after 16 years can be pulled overnight.

As elected representatives of the County Clare it is great to see members highlighting this in Dail sessions however it is talk from talk we need actions as had been done in detail last year. I'm urging you all to take a moment as the people of Clare have decided to give you a voice. It does not make any difference what party people are and voted for. The service is known as Clare Bus, Clare Accessible transport or going back to the original days East Clare Accessible Transport. The prominent theme here is accessibility. Its fair to say the entire country has taken an absolute battering over the past few months as we all stay at home. I think the reassurance to the locals of Clare that a service that has been proven to have huge success over 16 years can be restored. Accessibility to services is what is going to get the economy back on track once people can go and shop local, meet their friends for a coffee or get to and from school to see their friends.

Yes this is a long email but I think it would be great for you all to address this issue. And it would be much appreciated if you can confirm receipt of receiving this.

For those who are not familiar with this service this video will give an idea of the service it previously offered https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLbTuXEBTyQ&fbclid=IwAR2cK5uIeIUmmJMpOST_55flaaQgODRhYedWkvO_M_nK3BgRgTcXJUYTTdw

Kind Regards,
Gearóid K."
