Handlines, or Glionda, as they are called on the Aran Islands, used by fishermen for generations who used them in their currachs, or from the shore, to catch fish such as Po***ck, Wrasse, Red Bream and Mackerel, to name but a few. They were made using a wooden frame, nylon twine, a homemade lead weight and a baited hook or two at the end. The majority of the fish was caught around the islands during the summer months, and salt cured to last the winter, or sold or bartered on the mainland for anything from turf to flour or fuel. There are still a few old salty sea dogs who use them on the islands to this day. Sustainable food production at its best!!!

This is our Island postman Sean out in his boat yesterday. Sean spent many years as a commercial fisherman, fishing herring, mackerel and prawns around the Irish coast. He retired from fishing a few years ago, got the job as the postman, and settled into Island life. Like most fishermen, he still has a great love for the sea. He spent over 20 years scuba diving around the island, and now on his days off, this is where you’ll find him, out fishing po***ck and mackerel at the back of Inishmore, close to nature and the peace and tranquility of the sea. We had two dogs out on a tour yesterday with their owners and they had the best sleep ever probably due to the fresh sea air
With all the rain today we decided to freshen up our website a bit, and simplify the booking options.
We’ve also updated our gallery.

Another great review from a couple of anglers, on holiday from the US, we had out with us last week😍😍
We cater for all anglers, from the complete novice, who has never lifted a rod or caught a fish before, to the seriously salty anglers, from whom we’re always happy to still learn a trick or two from😉😉
It was great to have , Jack, Siobhan & Adam out fishing with us on the Alissa G yesterday. It definitely wasn’t the first time Ryan was fishing, and it showed, he was the first to hook into the mackerel. Siobhan and Adam caught their first fish ever, but they didn’t stop there and kept reeling in the po***ck and mackerel as did Jack, who, as we found out, has a lot of mutual friends as me. Ireland is small!! As it has done for the last few weeks, the weather played ball, the scones, made by Evelyn, went down a treat and for Jack and Adam, the mackerel sashimi I made for them!! We hope they enjoy the rest of their Connemara adventure!!! Thanks lads
So we brought this lovely lady from North Carolina on a circumnavigation of Inishmore. She has been visiting the island for years, taking along her students, and has walked or hiked all along the sea cliffs, the blow holes, Worm hole, Black Fort and of course,Dun Aengus. On Monday she got a chance to see it all from a completely different perspective, and to say she was impressed would be an understatement!!
She also got to meet the local fishermen and discuss the price of lobster 🦞
The sea is so calm outside the island these days. It would be a shame to miss it. The blow holes! The Blue hole! The Worm hole!

We had these three lighthouse spotters out on Sunday morning with us so we brought along retired Lighthouse Keeper John O’Toole as a guide! John was able to give them a real insight into the tough life as a lighthouse keeper, spending sometimes up to ten weeks on a lighthouse if the weather was too bad to be taken off!! And all with no Wi-Fi or Instagram😳😳As usual, another beautiful day under the sea cliffs at Inishmore
