Lookin forward to this talk !

GAHS free illustrated public lecture on THE BLAKES OF MENLO CASTLE on 13th January at 8 pm. The venue is the HARBOUR HOTEL, and the speaker is PATRICK LARKIN.

Menlo Castle sits on the banks of the river Corrib, a few miles upriver from Galway city. It was constructed as a defensive English outpost in a Gaelic world, gradually morphing over time to become a comfortable home worthy of its wealthy aristocratic owners. These were one of the merchant Tribes of Galway, the baronets Blake, ennobled for their services to the state. The castle was occupied for three and a half centuries, until a tragic accidental fire consumed the iconic building.

The speaker, Patrick Larkin is a Galway native, a graduate of University College Galway and a chartered chemist. A former president of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, he is a widely published independent scholar with a particular interest in 13th century East Galway.

Fellow Galway Tour Guides member and Town Crier, Liam Silk got a nice feature about his life and times in the Connacht Tribune today.
Maith thú Liam !

Town Crier Liam Silke is a popular sight at special occasions in Galway City. Wearing medieval clothing and ringing a bell, his booming voice alerts people to what’s happening. He’s been doing this since the 1980s when he returned to his home town after a successful hospitality career in the UK....

As we approach the end of our 2024 Tourist season, our tour options have been quite positive overall. Originally from the barony of West Clare, Ger now calls Galway home. Since retiring from the 9-to-5, he is willing to share his passion guiding visitors around Ennis, the Burren, Sth. Galway, Connemara and Galway city!
We had a few City Walking tours on last week of October and what lovely reviews (as in enclosed screenshots) .

American tourists are the most frequent participants on our City Walking tours, Celtic Revival tours and Riverboat Sightseeing tours in Galway city and County.
