Building a Currach, Baile na nGall, County Kerry, 1940

An image showing the construction of a currach at Baile na nGall (Ballydavid) on the northern shores of Smerwick Harbour on the Di**le Peninsula in County Kerry in about 1940. The print is annotated on the reverse ‘Building a Naomhóg, Baile na nGall, Di**le, County Kerry’. A currach is a type of small boat with a wooden or wicker-work frame, over which animal skins or hides were stitched together. They were propelled by oars or sails according to circumstances. The construction and design of the currach is unique to the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland, with variations in size and shape by region. ‘Naomhóg’ is the name given to the type of currach which is used by coastal communities in County Kerry. Naomhógs are slightly longer than the currachs seen in other parts of the west coast of Ireland. The print forms part of a bound volume containing a collection of ‘views of Irish life’ intended for publication in ‘The Capuchin Annual’. IN 1601 – BATTLE OF KINSALE.

The Spanish forces arrived in Kinsale, Co Cork in September 1601. However, their army was much smaller than the Irish leaders had hoped for. In spite of this, the Irish were in a good position at the onset of the battle. Red Hugh O’Donnell persuaded a more cautious Hugh O’Neill to attack the assembled English forces, led by Lords Mountjoy and Carew.

This day 141 years ago – 19 September 1880 – Charles Stewart Parnell spoke in Co Clare, saying that those who took possession of lands previously occupied by tenant farmers should be isolated.

This was soon piloted on Charles Boycott in Co Mayo, leading to the term “boycotting.”

IN 1695 – PENAL LAWS ARE PASSED WHICH RESTRICT THE RIGHTS OF CATHOLICS TO HAVE AN EDUCATION, TO BEAR ARMS, OR TO POSSESS A HORSE WORTH MORE THAN FIVE POUNDS.

When Limerick fell to the Williamite army in 1691, the first article of surrender stated that:

The Roman Catholics of this Kingdom shall enjoy such privileges in their exercise of their religion as are consistent with the laws of Ireland, or as they did enjoy in the reign of King Charles the second: and their majesties, as soon as their affairs permit them to summon a parliament in this kingdom, will endeavour to procure the said Roman Catholics such farther security in that particular, as may preserve them from any disturbances upon the account of their said religion
