✨ The Bright Season Begins… Lá Fhéile Bealtaine !

Bealtaine is thought to mean ‘bright or goodly fire’. It is one of the oldest festival days in Ireland. Bealtaine marks the halfway point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice. This year Bealtaine falls on 5th May at 00:00

At this time every year, fires were lit at Uisneach to ‘welcome-in the Summer’. This was an important date in the Irish calendar bringing celebration and merriment. To the ancient celts, the year was divided into a light half and a dark half. Bealtaine celebrated the end of the darkness and the coming of the light and just like Samhain, it was marked in ancient times with the lighting of great bonfires.

Ancient verses known as the ‘Dindshenchas’ (Lore of Places) tell us that the first great fire was lit on the Hill of Uisneach by the druid Míde (the eponym of Meath). The fire burned for seven years and across the land, every chief’s hearth was lit from it. When the other druids objected to Míde keeping the fire ablaze, he gathered them together at Uisneach where it is said, he cut out their tongues and buried them on the Hill !

From ancient times until the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, tribal leaders, chiefs, kings and High Kings would gather at Uisneach in ritual celebration of Bealtaine. A huge fire was lit on the summit of this sacred hill, visible to over a quarter of the country. We can imagine that bards would share their knowledge and relay stories of surrounding counties’ goings-on and tales of further afield. Poets would recite words that painted many a-picture in the minds-eye of eager, listners present. Music may have filled the air, sweeping over the grassy knolls and flooding the celebrations with a sense of excitment. The cantations of Druids being heard reverberating around the Hill. The Fire would then be lit and upon seeing the light from Uisneach, fires were then ignited on hills and mountains across Ireland, ushering in the light half of the year.
