Inishbofin Genealogy by Marie Coyne
Almost twenty five years ago I started the Inishbofin Genealogical Project, researching the families of Inishbofin, surrounding islands, mainland and overseas. At the time I went from house to house handwriting and compiling names and details on large sheets of paper that I had copied and taped together to fulfill the ever growing paper trail with original tea
marks and everything! (See paper trail photos) As you can imagine it took many hours, months and years! After gathering the initial information I bought a ‘Family Tree Maker’ package online and began the laborious task of typing all my information into the computer program. Most of the names in the Family Trees are linked in some way or another, those that I did not find a link for I kept in separate files. My work has circled the globe at this stage - many of you may not even be aware that the family trees you now have were originally compiled by me on your ancestral home of Inishbofin Island. Some of the largest trees were of John Lacey & Mary McGraph. Throughout the years various people have added to the original trees but at the time, because everyone on the island was not linked, a number of trees were not added to the Inishbofin Genealogical data base. I still have those trees in their original paper format. If you would like me to help you research your family history please feel free to contact me at: [email protected]

If you are beginning your search it is best to send as much information as you have and even the most seemingly small detail can be significant! For example:
Name/s of your ancestors
Date of birth
Place of birth
Names of their parents
Village they came from
Name of their spouse/children
Year they left Inishbofin/travel details
Date of death
Place of death
Any other information
