The first castle built on the estate was a tower house built in the late 12th century by the Esmonde family, Normans who came to southeast Ireland from Lincolnshire in the 1170s after the Norman invasion of Ireland (1169).[4] They also built a tower house, which still stands, at Rathlannan immediately to the south.[5]
Oliver Cromwell spent a night on the estate in 1649, prior to the October 1649 Sack of Wexford. His Roundhead army used the land around Johnstown Castle to prepare. The Esmondes, Catholics, were expelled during the Cromwellian years.
Johnstown Castle was bought by the Grogan family in 1692.

The Conor Pass is one of the highest mountain passes in Ireland, and provides the most dramatic and scenic way of crossing from the north to south coast of the Di**le Peninsula. This narrow, twisting road runs for 12kms between the town of Di**le on the south and Kilmore Cross on the north of the peninsula, where roads fork to Cloghane/Brandon or Castlegregory. The views from the road are breathtaking, with a glaciated landscape of mountains, corrie lakes and a broad sweeping valley spread out below.

Sitting within reach of our famous 400-year-old Walls is one of the City’s most recognisable - and arguably one of the most stunning - landmarks, the Guildhall. It has been in the heart of city life since 1887 and the auburn brick building is the anchor for the buzzing Guildhall Square.

The Guildhall’s most arresting feature is its collection of stunning stained-glass windows. Donated by London Companies, they represent everything from fishmongers to musicians.

Recognise the Guildhall Clock? It was modelled on London’s Big Ben.

Fashioned in a neo-gothic style, the Guildhall is one of the most striking buildings in the North West and was originally built in 1887 by The Honourable The Irish Society. The red sandstone building is of neo-gothic architecture, with Tudor overtones. The

Peace bridge

Just a short walk from the Guildhall and the City’s famous 400+ year-old Walls, the Peace Bridge is a visual treat and a vital stop on any Derry~Londonderry and Northern Ireland travel itinerary.

It opened on 25 June 2011, connecting Ebrington Square with the rest of the city centre. The 235 metres (771 ft) bridge was designed by AECOM, who also designed the Sutong Yangtze River Bridge, and Wilkinson Eyre Architects, who also designed the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

The Peace Bridge has become an integral part of the city’s infrastructure and is held in high regard by locals and visitors alike for its stunning physical beauty and in equal measures for the symbolic story it represents.

THE HISTORY OF LOUGH ESKE CASTLE
Lough Eske Castle has a long history which is wrapped in the story of Co. Donegal and Ireland. It is a story of being carved piece by piece from local stone carried by Clydesdale horses along specially constructed roadways. It is a tale of being won, lost, ruined and restored. Powerful 14th century clans of Donegal the O'Donnells had their seat here, wealthy landowners ruled from here and Edwardian glamour was played out. In 1861 the new Lough Eske Castle, as we know it today, was built on the site of the old Brooke Mansion. Always a place for entertaining international guests since 1861, Lough Eske Castle remains full of warm Donegal hospitality today as it did over 150 years ago.

The Blue Pool is a magical tidal harbour located in a rock basin in the woods and hidden in the middle of Glengarriff.
The Blue Pool is a tidal harbour hidden in the middle of Glengarriff. Pedestrian access to the harbour is beside Quills, in the centre of the village. The pool is formed where the river meets the sea, a wonderful rocky inlet surrounded by lush vegetation. Ferry trips to Garinish Island run from the picturesque Blue Pool and there are a number of beautiful walks through the woods with views of the harbour that are well worth exploring.

The Skellig Islands are 2 uninhabited, rocky islets off the southwestern coast of Ireland. Skellig Michael is known for its well-preserved early Christian monastery. The site, reached by steep steps, includes stone beehive-shaped huts, oratories and crosses. Thousands of puffins breed on Skellig Michael during the warmer months. To the northeast, the island of Little Skellig is home to a large colony of gannets.
