Here is an alarming Article from today's Connaught Tribune...

Wild Brown Trout and salmon have been migrating to the Clare River and the spawning tributaries over the past few week's..
Non Native invasive pike are waiting for their prey like the crocodile waiting to ambush the wildebeest crossing the the Serengeti.

Most of the trout in the lower part of Lough Corrib SAC spawn in the Clare River and it's tributaries.

Will the New IFI Board be left to deal with mishaps within the IFI and dealing with EU legislation and repugnant BYE LAWS.

Surely the Minister has to look into the Running of Inland Fisheries Ireland..!!!!

Todays INDO piece by Caroline

Will a new Board of Inland Fisheries Ireland resolve all these legacy issues that have been stewing since 2010.
Many believe that we shouldn’t start from here on any new workplan or roadmap. Is it a clear case of “We are where we aren’t” with Salmonid fisheries in particular.

Caroline O'Doherty, Environment Correspondent Irish independent October 23 2023 2:30 AM

Prosecutions for fisheries offences are feared to be in doubt because of an error in processing the cases.

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has acknowledged a problem arose in recent days with cases taken before the district court.

It is understood that a number of cases were dismissed or had to be withdrawn after it was discovered that the papers were not appropriately signed off on.

In a statement, IFI said: “A concern has arisen in relation to internal authorisations.

“This is being addressed by Inland Fisheries Ireland at present.

“There are ongoing matters before the court, and we are not in a position to comment any further at this time.”

Initially it was believed the issue was confined to one district court area but there are now fears that upcoming prosecutions right across the country could be affected.

Some dismayed fisheries officers whose frontline work had formed the basis of the prosecutions only found out about the problem when solicitors began ringing offices requesting the return of fishing equipment seized as part of the investigations.
The situation comes as a blow to the agency which is responsible for the protection of habitats and fish life in 74,000kms of rivers and streams as well as the country’s 128,000 hectares of lakes and all coastal waters.

In recent times it has increased its patrols and enforcement activities, clamping down on polluters, illegal netting and unlicenced fishing.

Last week it secured a prosecution against Uisce Éireann for pollution of the Ballinagh River in Cavan which caused a fish kill during the summer of 2022 when a wastewater treatment plant discharged high levels of ammonia.

The previous week, IFI also successfully prosecuted a man for using a triple-barbed fish hook on a stretch of the River Lee where it is banned because of the severe injury it causes to fish that are returned to the water.

It is not clear if any past prosecutions are affected by the issue that has arisen with authorisations.

The issue comes after a period of turmoil for the agency which has been without a board since early this year after a spate of resignations and internal wrangling prompted Environment Minister Eamon Ryan to stand down the remaining members.

Mr Ryan said last week he expected to be in a position to appoint a new board next month.

Another invasive non native species found last week found by inland fisheries Ireland on Lough Corrib and this non native carp is automatically protected under corase fish BYE LAW 806 (2006).

These bye laws 809 and 806 have to be removed from SACs.!!!!!!!

Another invader has been found on Lough Corrib – fuelling fears of ecological damage to Galway’s most important water system. Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) confirmed its staff discovered a non-native carp on the lake on July 17 during stock management operations. It’s believed to be the first...

IFIs own Failure to carry out their own statuary responsibility to these lake's by reducing Staff members , reducing funding for rehabilitation works. Etc Etc.......

Well done to Ballindiff Angling Club for bringing these concerns to the papers and the local communities...

Angling clubs fear there is going to be a push from IFI and certain private Angling Businesses and vested interest individuals to bring to life a proposal from the last CEO of inland fisheries Ireland to promote and introduce catch and release fishing and reduce current catch limits on Lough Corrib SAC and other western lake's..

This is another attempt to blame trout Anglers for all the recent bad years of angling on the western lake's while the lack of investment from Government and reduction in pike management programmes and polluted river's and streams have contributed to the demise of the past glory days of trout angling on lough corrib.

The IFI them selfs are under funded by their own department..Trout Anglers have a right to fish traditional methods on the Corrib and angling clubs have contributed hundreds of thousands of Euros over the past 40 years while IFI have reduced their staff and have no money to carry out rehabilitation works ..

A reminder what the last CEO of IFI was recommending to the department in the connaught Tribune !!!!!!
Leave the people's lake's alone and invest in the fishery....

A secret proposal by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) to introduce a ‘catch and release’ policy for trout fishing on lakes in Galway and Mayo will be fiercely resisted by anglers. Thanks again to the connaught Tribune for highlighting the issue of invasive non native species been protected on SACs ..
These bye laws are endorsed by the state.

Anglers have now had there say in a public consultation on the western lake's plan drafted by inland fisheries Ireland.

The majority of these submissions wants the two Bye laws 809 and 806 removed from SACs.
