Nicholas Grundy is a self-taught photographer who started the never-ending learning process in 2006 when he first set off to explore the world with an old point and shoot camera. Currently a Getty Images contributor, his first exhibition and major award both occurred in 2008, and since then he's received numerous commendations and his work has been exhibited in multiple galleries in Berlin and Melbourne. His work also appears in such publications as Time Magazine, The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, International Traveller and Australian Traveller Magazine. Nicholas' fine art prints appear in the collections of the University of Melbourne and in various private homes and institutions across Australia, Europe, and the U.S. Nicholas Grundy has successfully mentored his students on photography walks in Berlin, Melbourne and Galway towards producing wonderful images, regardless of whether they take their photos with a €2,000 DSLR, a film rangefinder, a point and shoot, mobile phone, or even an egg! (Yes, you can take a photo with an egg. Ask me and I will show you how some time!)

For some inspiration before the walk, check out Nicholas' portfolios at www.nicholasgrundy.com. Many of these photographs were created with point and shoot cameras, proving that you don't need an expensive camera to create striking works. See if you can determine which photos were taken on a point and shoot instead of a DSLR – most people cannot!

Another favourite shot from last week's shoot for Water Safety Ireland. I'm no expert but I counted at least 3 uniquely different types of seaweed down there.

Massive thank you to Doug Van Sant Photography for the best photo of myself in years. As a photographer I'm never on this side of the lens and am usually a bit of a lone wolf, so I had a blast with fellow photographers Doug and Mike Hyde, and videographer Matt Delbaggio covering the Aer Lingus College Football Classic for three big days last week. Big thanks also to Scott McCabe and the rest of the Aer Lingus Classic team for the all their hard work behind the scenes year-round to make this annual event come together so successfully.

Assistant photographer(s) needed urgently in Galway!
*Real estate and interior architecture experience a must.
**Video skills, drone license, construction background are a huge plus. Can be based along west coast as shoots will generally range from Limerick up to Galway and Mayo.

We're looking for an understudy/intern wanting to assist long-term. Potential for event work also in future (sports, weddings, conferences) and possibly overseas events also.

Private messages or contact form at nicholasgrundy.com please.

How was this 8 years ago!? Scary to think that my Germany translating has in fact been replaced by computerization.
Also funny to see how construction photography/videography has now become a bit of a specialization.

Looking North at 2am last night...
*I don't usually share low-quality, zoomed-in phone photos, but isn't it insane how far north Ireland is?! I've told people living closer to the equator that around the longest day of the year it simply doesn't get dark at all. The sun is in a constant state of either setting or rising again, ALL NIGHT.

Finally picked up a copy of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic commemorative photo book featuring Navy Football United States Naval Academy vs. Notre Dame Football and delighted to see my personal favourite photo of the star-spangled banner. Many thanks to Mike Hyde for putting together the album, and it was an absolute pleasure to work alongside both yourself and Doug Van Sant at the game! Likewise great to work with the video dream team of Jackson Wi**er and Aaron Rolo.

Looking forward to this year's game already!

29 Feb 2008 - About to graduate from RMC Australia (Duntroon) with a bunch of great guys and girls. Another leap year 16 years ago and hard to think it's been that long, where'd the time go?! Also my best/worst mustache of all time...

Latest print sale for a newly-built boardroom in Melbourne, Australia. The Melbourne General Cemetery (MGC, not to be confused with the MCG!) sits in the inner-north suburb of Carlton where I once lived more than two decades ago. I absolutely love the patterns that present themselves so well to a bird's eye view.

Discovered these old photos from my 2009-2012 Berlin series while searching the hard drives... particularly unsettling considering that it wasn't that long ago that the Soviets were actually still in Germany. After 2 years spent bringing back terms like "shell shock", "trench foot" and "human waves", I fear that this guy on the left is trying to retake the plains of Eastern Europe.

15 years ago today I took this photo in Egypt... 5 years ago it was purchased by and published in National Geographic! The shot was captured on a 10 Megapixel Eos 400D, proof that you don't need an expensive camera to get a great photo or get published in NatGeo. That's what I tell my photography students anyway. Far more important is the ability to develop an eye for photography, and to keep hiking and climbing to get unique perspectives on an otherwise overly-photographed landmark such as Hatshepsut's Mortuary Temple at Luxor's West Bank.
