AN ABANDONED CHURCH, A POISONED GLEN AND A FORGOTTEN COUNTY!
Doesn't sound very attractive, does it, but allow me to explain...
County Donegal is sometimes referred to as 'The Forgotten County' because it's almost cut off from the rest of the Republic of Ireland by Northern Ireland. This particular part of Donegal is called the Poisoned Glen and although that doesn't sound very appealing the name is actually the result of a cartographic error. It was originally called An Gleann Neamhe, which means The Heavenly Glen, but when an English cartographer mapped the area, he mistakenly marked it An Gleann Neimhe which translates to The Poisoned Glen.
The old church in the picture, which was built entirely using white marble quarried a few hundred yards away, was abandoned a long time ago for want of a congregation. In the graveyard stands just one lone tombstone.
The Poisoned Glen is, however, one of the most beautiful areas in County Donegal, renowned for its sweeping valleys, imposing mountains and shimmering lakes. Visit if you can, you'll never forget it!
