Down a quiet country lane right on the edge of Leitrim Village, you will find the beautiful Ash Lodge. A light and spacious 3 bedroomed self catering house that has been lovingly restored and updated by owner, Tom Gannon. When you walk in the front door, you immediately feel the pressures and strains of everyday life melt away. A beautiful log burning stove with the original stonework exposed behind it heats the cosy sitting room and as you make your way into the fully equipped kitchen, there is a photograph of how Ash Lodge looked before Tom began his labour of love to transform this place into the warm, welcoming cottage that it is today. There are 3 ensuite bedrooms which are full of that “country cottage charm and character” with sections of exposed stonework yet also have that crisp, clean and beautifully maintained feel. The back garden is an absolute treasure and Tom told us how the walls that make up the patio / barbecue area and that line the lawn were actually part of the original structure of the Lodge and each stone was set in place by his own hand. You truly have the best of both worlds when you stay here – nestled away in a quiet, countryside setting yet within walking distance of Leitrim Village where you can treat yourself to a delicious meal at The Leitrim Inn & Blueway Lodge and enjoy the live music that is here every weekend or maybe avail of the new package available at Electric Bike Trails – an “Energising Cycle and Rejuvinating Spa Experience” where you can hire a bike, enjoy the countryside from a whole new perspective and finish your day by relaxing in the outdoor hot tub and sauna at Drumhierny Woodland Hideaway. There is so much to see and do, especially with Drumshanbo and Carrick-on-Shannon being just up the road but, if you were stuck for ideas, Tom has a wealth of local knowledge and will be sure to come up with activities that will suit your taste. 18/06/2024

St John’s Eve is on the 23rd of June but most of you may know it as “Bonefire Night” or “Bonfire Night”. A night that is traditionally celebrated throughout the Irish countryside with the lighting of bonfires as the sun slips beneath the horizon, most often on hilltops or at the crossroads in the centre of a community. The community would gather together to play instruments, dance, sing, tell stories and maybe be lucky enough to sample some “goody” – a sweet treat made by breaking bread into a pot of milk and mixing through some honey or sugar and maybe adding a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon and it would then be carefully warmed over the bonfire. The fire itself was thought to have magical powers and young and old would perform great feats of bravery by leaping through the flames; burning weeds in the fire would prevent fields that grow crops becoming overgrown with weeds; the ashes of the bonefire would be sprinkled on the fields or vegetable gardens to improve fertility and guarantee a bountiful harvest and, in a new house, the smouldering embers from the St John’s Eve bonefire would be used to light the fire in the hearth. There are many traditions and rituals associated with the bonefires on St John’s Eve and nowhere is the tradition kept more alive than in Effrinagh where people still gather together at the crossroads to celebrate and dance, sing and tell stories so, come along to Effrinagh Crossroads (N41 NP04) on Sunday, the 23rd of June at 8pm to keep some of the traditions of St John’s Eve alive!

The Shannonside Community Centre Afterschool and Youth Groups have been working closely over the past few weeks with Kate Murtagh Sheridan and Helena Golden, The Willow Woman, to breathe new life into their community space in Carrick-on-Shannon, known as The Stone Yard. Kate has been working with the young people at Rosebank, developing new skills, firing their imaginations and designing and creating a vibrant and dynamic mosaic sign, made using bottle tops. While Helena has been teaching young people the heritage craft that our ancestors practiced on a regular basis - the art of weaving with locally grown willow rods to create Mini Flower Hanging Baskets, Willow Bird Feeders and Decorative Willow Wall Hangings. All of these activities have been an amazing learning experience for all involved, supporting dexterity, improving hand-eye co-ordination, gaining confidence in the areas of team work, DIY construction and creative freedom within design, learning about wildlife and how to bring vibrancy and life to the Stone Yard and develop the young people's interest in nature. Together, Kate and Helena have helped the young people to create a sensory, environmentally friendly garden area that they should be so proud of. As part of the Cruinniú na nÓg celebrations, the Stone Yard will have a grand opening on Saturday the 15th of June from 11am to showcase everybody’s hard work and dedication so, come along and show your appreciation for their artisitc abilities and determination to develop a space that everyone will love (Eircode: N41DY99)

The Maiden Aunt is the very first 3-Act play that Jimmy Keary wrote in 1999 and it first premiered in Killala, Co Mayo. A retired teacher and spinster, Gertie O’Grady goes to stay with her niece, Mary Murphy, to recover after a spell in hospital. During her stay, Mary tries to persuade Gertie to make a will but Gertie apparently “dies” before she gets the chance to do so… the plot thickens as Mary’s husband comes up with an elaborate plan on how they can get their hands on Gertie’s money! The play has been described as a side-splitting, fast moving comedy and The Drumkeeran Drama Group will be bringing it to life on the stage at Drumkeeran Community Centre on the 27th and 28th of June with doors opening at 7:15pm each night. Tickets are available at the door every night so, don’t forget to mark your calendars and look forward to a night filled with laughter!

05/06/2024

On the road between Kiltyclogher and Glenfarne, in the townland of Corracloona, there lies a National Monument known as “Prince Connell’s Grave” or the Corracloona Court Tomb. An unassuming spot that you might ordinarily drive past as there is nothing really to advertise its presence other than a small signpost that you could well miss if you weren’t looking out for it. But look out for it you should! The little wooden turnstile at the entrance has become slightly overgrown but rather than it being a hindrance, it kind of adds to the sense of wonder at the unspoilt nature of this place. Amongst the blanket of heather and long grasses, a well trodden trail to Prince Connell’s Grave, akin to a “sheep-path”, is easily picked out with the eyes. How this place became known as “Prince Connell’s Grave” is unknown but it has been said that it is the final resting place of Conall Gulban, the 5th century ruler of Tír Chonaill. The only excavation carried out here was in 1953 and hollow scrapers, arrowheads, flint and coarse pottery that dated back to the Neolithic Period were found but no evidence of human remains were uncovered. Although it is believed that the tomb possibly dates back to 2000-1500B.C., it has been described as a court tomb, a dolmen tomb and a wedge tomb and so, it seems to defy classification as all of these tomb types are from different periods of time. There is also a very unusual feature of a “kennel-hole” at the entrance stone… there have been no discoveries of such a feature anywhere else in Ireland and it is more commonly found in tombs in the south of France or Belgium and is believed that it’s use was for later burial, offering gifts, or for talking to the dead.
Sitting amongst the heather, beside this imposing structure, watching the ever-changing sky, taking in the amazing views, listening to the skylarks as they fly overhead, there is just an overwhelming sense that there is far more to this place than what we can see so come and experience this little piece of magic for yourself!

Located very close to The New Ballagh Centre and just down the road from The Organic Centre in Rossinver is St. Molaise’s Well. There are many legends and stories about St. Molaise but one of them is that he was preaching to a group of people at the place where the well is situated today. It happened to be a particularly warm day and the people who had gathered to hear him speak became very thirsty. So, St. Molaise went over to a rock, pushed his hand through the surface of it and miraculously water began to flow from it and the people were able to quench their thirst. There is now a small stone structure built over this site and it is known as Tobar Molaise (Molaise’s Well). As with most holy wells, there is a cure to be found here and drinking the water or bathing in it is said to cure jaundice.
