Happy Bealtaine Everyone! It's the first day of Celtic summer and the sun is shining. Traditionally, decorating a tree or bush with ribbons or shells near an individual house was a way to celebrate. It was usually white thorn, the most potent of faery trees which flowers in May, and paradoxically is considered very unlucky if brought indoors. Water drawn from local holy wells at this time was considered especially potent, and flowers left at holy wells on May Day were also believed to be restorative.

A nice hint of a rainbow over Raphoe Castle yesterday. The castle was built in the 1630s for the Rev. Dr John Leslie, Church of Ireland Lord Bishop of Raphoe. Bishop Leslie was besieged within the castle during the Irish Rebellion of 1641, until he was relieved by the Laggan Army. Leslie was laid siege to again during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, with the castle surrendering in 1650.
