What is the National Famine Way?
A 165km digitally and physically waymarked historic trail following in the footsteps of 1,490 famine emigrants in 1847 and particularly focusing on one of them, 12 year old Daniel Tighe. The National Famine Way runs from Strokestown Park, Co. Roscommon to EPIC, the emigration museum in Dublin, along country pathways and the Royal Canal towpath.

Some great news for the Royal Canal Greenway: Irish Rail are running a promotional campaign for users to come to Maynooth from Dublin on the commuter train 🚆 (where there is no limit on bringing your bike) and tour the Greenway.

What other locations does the route go through?
The route continues through Mullingar, Cloondara and Longford (Please remember these services require bike spaces to be booked in advance), running right alongside or close to the railway line for the full section between Maynooth and Mullingar.

Why Should I visit the Royal Canal Greenway?
The Royal Canal Greenway captures 200 years of history as it flows through rolling fields and stunning waterside villages. 🙌 With its beauty, wonder and rich heritage it is not something to be missed and is a perfect day out to enjoy a bike ride or to simply enjoy a stroll with loved ones.
