Official page for the Boyne Valley to Lakelands County Greenway, which runs for 30km from Navan in County Meath to Kingscourt in Co Cavan. A walkers' and cyclists' paradise along the route of the old railway line, the greenway passes close to or through the villages of Kilberry, Wilkinstown, Castletown Kilpatrick, Nobber and Kilmainhamwood. Meath County Council has announced the official opening of the next section of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway between Nobber and Kilmainhamwood!

This opening provides a seamless 8.7km walking and cycle path commencing in Castletown and finishing just north of Kilmainhamwood.

"Together with the previously opened section from Navan to Wilkinstown (7.7kms), today marks a milestone in Meath County Council’s work to develop what will be 30kms of walking and cycle routes between Navan and Kingscourt passing on or close to six villages, Kilberry, Baile Ghib, Wilkinstown, Castletown Kilpatrick, Nobber, Kilmainhamwood and connecting the towns of Navan and Kingscourt."

As part of today’s announcement, Meath County Council has released the map of The Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway, which clearly illustrates the main sections that are open to the public to use immediately, in addition to providing a guide to parking and the distances between each section, enabling users to plan their visit.

It is anticipated that this new Greenway will attract many visitors to County Meath to experience Ireland’s newest Greenway and what will be a walker’s paradise with pedestrian pathways connecting the six villages, encouraging economic activity and an opportunity for visitors to interact with the local Meath people!

One of the stops on the Boyne Valley to Lakelands County Greenway is Kilberry.

Kilberry is the site of a medieval church (now ruined) and graveyard with a chest tomb, ornate grave slab and medieval font. The headstones in the oldest part of the graveyard have been photographed and recorded and are available on www.historicgraves.com. A large ringfort, located just east of the village at Rathcoon, is also visible from the graveyard. Much of the land was owned in past times by the Everards of Randalstown House who were famous for their to***co plantations.

Be sure to make your way to Kilberry on your journey!

Castletown to Nobber is a 3.5km stretch of our Greenway that is great to stretch the legs on these late summer evenings.
If you feel a bit more energetic, you can include both village loops to make it into a 10km walk!

As part of Heritage Week 2023, Sli na HOibre Walking Group in Nobber are offering Walking tours along the Nobber line on request.

One site to visit along the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway is the George Eogan Cultural & Heritage Centre. Work is nearly complete on their 15th Century church tower.

Cathaoirleach of Kells Municipal District Cllr. Eugene Cassidy was joined by Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD, recently to officially open Castletown Trail on the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway.

Members of the public can now use the existing car park at Castletown as the start and end point of their walk, run or cycle journey.
