Just a short drive from Turrock Cottage

Looking for a fantastic autumn adventure? Well, right between the charming villages of Shillelagh and Tinahely, you'll find Tomnafinnoge Wood – a treasure trove for nature lovers, offering four different walks to choose from.

Let's break them down in a fun and easy way:

🍁Hazel Walk (1.5km): If you're short on time or just looking for a quick nature fix, the Hazel Walk is perfect. It's super easy and suitable for young families. Estimated time is 30mins. Start at the Tomnafinnogue car park and follow the red arrow on brown background - Loop Walk.

🌾River Walk (2.9km): This one's a hit with everyone! It's like a stroll through history, following the Derry River. The path is flat and perfect for buggy's. Plus, it's just a quick hop from both Shillelagh and Tinahely. Estimated time is 45mins. Start at the Tomnafinnogue car park and follow the blue arrow on brown background - Linear Trail.

🌿Beech Walk (3.6km): Another fantastic option for families! This is a moderate walk. As you wander through this ancient woodland, you'll be amazed by all the beautiful trees and plants around you. Estimated time is 1 hour. Start at the Tomnafinnogue car park there are no markings for this walk, follow the loop trail.

🍂Oak Walk (3.7km): Fancy a longer adventure? The Oak Walk is for you! It's a loop trail with plenty of Giant Oak trees to keep you company. Great for families too, with an estimated time of 1 hour. Start at the Tomnafinnogue car park and follow the green arrow on brown background - Loop Trail.

Each of these walks has its own charm, so pick the one that suits your mood and time. Tomnafinnoge Wood is a Special Area of Conservation, and it's a place where nature and history come together in a delightful autumn adventure. So, get out there, breathe in the crisp autumn air, and let the magic of this ancient woodland transport you back in time! 🍁🌳🍂

Rathgall Hillfort. Rathgall, Rath Geal

(the white or bright fort), or Ring of the Rath is a large multivallate hill fort near the town of Shillelagh.

Dating from the Bronze age, it consists of three roughly concentric stone ramparts with a fourth masonry wall dating from the Medieval period at its centre.
The Rathgall Hillfort was excavated in the early 1970s by archaeologist Barry Raftery. In a pre-publication report, Raftery described the fort with its outer three concentric stone ramparts, enclosing a fourth wall of later, probably medieval construction. The outer three walls likely date to the late Bronze Age, but may have been constructed in different phases. The total area of the fort is 7.3 hectares (18 acres). A large quantity of artifacts, including glass beads, bronze and clay mould fragments, and potsherds were found. One of the most spectacular finds was a gold-plated copper ring, found with deposits of burnt human bones. An urn contained the cremation burials, all placed in a stone-lined pit, was once surrounded by a mass of wooden stakes. After its initial prehistoric period of occupation the site was abandoned for as long as a thousand years. During the second or third century CE an iron-smelting industry developed at the site, where earlier weapons of bronze were cast.
