Red Mary who married Cooper of Markree
Leamaneh Castle, Co. Clare, good example here of differing styles. Leamaneh was originally a 15th century tower house, built in 1480 by Turlogh O’Brien (see building on right of photo). Conor O’Brien and his wife, Mary (also known as Máire Rua or Red Mary), added the fortified house in the 1630's (building centre and left of photo). Mary has gone down in history for her notoriety. It is said that servants that did not live up to her high expectations would be hung out of one of the upper castle windows, the men by their necks and the women by their hair. Mary would often ride with her husband at the head of his troops until he was killed in battle during the Cromwellian War. She went on to marry a number of other men, one being a former Parliamentarian Officer that fought against her husband.
Red Mary is believed to have been killed by disaffected locals who sealed her alive in a hollow tree trunk and let her starve to death. The Castle is in ruin since the end of the 18th century. It is believed to be the most haunted castle in Ireland!! (photo from the Cronin Collection, dates to 1974)

Moving eastwards now onto our 2nd planned Greenway, the Sligo Leitrim & Northern Counties Greenway.
In 2016, a community group in Dromahair Co.Leitrim succeeded in developing a 1 kilometre sample of this known as the 'Long Stretch'. Its a fantastic amenity (with hints of its past remaining) and linking back into the village alongside the equally beautiful Creevelea Abbey
There is no doubt whatsoever that the development of this 'Long Stretch' helped influence the idea for the larger cross border Greenway project which will lead back into Collooney linking in at Union Road.
Well done all the Dromahair Community
