The 1st of February, St. Brigid’s Day, Irelands female patron Saint. I picked up a St. Brigid’s cross for the house yesterday from a lady weaving them on the street in Nenagh. In days gone by, hanging a Brigid’s cross from the rafters of one’s house was believed to bring the blessing and protection of the saint for the remainder of the year. The practice of crafting Brigid’s crosses declined over the years, something we all did in school but maybe not so much these days? In addition to the shamrock and harp, Brigid’s cross is a national symbol of Ireland.

Is it a tradition you still do today?

A little before and after on the old barn this morning (scroll to the end to see the before ➡️). The side of the old barn is finished in beautiful iroko wood as are the handcrafted double doors.
The corrugated iron roof was saved and sprayed in a traditional red colour to give it a new lease of life. The barn now houses the hot tub here and is the perfect mix of old & new

Great to have our first Christmas guests this year and to see the cottage celebrate Christmas once again. It’s been a long time!

It’s been a busy week here .view_farmhouse taking down the Christmas decor and doing outside maintenance for spring. The beech hedging in front of the cottage was trimmed for the 2024 season 🍃

Settling into Christmas weekend with a nice glass of 🥃✨. Named after and created in honour of a great man, former local publican Jim Mac. A fitting tribute to a a man who welcomed one and all to his pub, known locally as “The Shop”, with open arms, kind words and great craic, especially over the Christmas period. Our local pub here .view_farmhouse.

A frosty winter’s morning yesterday .view_farmhouse, although a slight change in the weather today. The sedum on the stone walls and beds has been doing so well in this harsh weather and the window boxes have been changed up to add to the festive feel. A visiting robin most mornings, I’ll need to be quicker with the camera to catch him though❄️

A busy weekend here at Meadview Farmhouse as we start to decorate for Christmas. A lot of requests in last week for the paint colour used on our walls here. It's Slaked Lime by which works very well on the lime plastered walls as it's a breathable paint.

Relaxing Sunday morning at Meadow View Farmhouse 🌺

The traditional windows let beautiful natural light into the farmhouse. The oak heads over the windows are over 200 years old. The shutters finish the windows off nicely, don’t you agree? 😍

The side of the old barn is finished in beautiful iroko wood, so are the handcrafted double doors.

The corrugated iron roof of the barn was sprayed in a traditional red colour to give it a new lease of life.

The small sliding sash window and lantern light fixtures finish the old barn off nicely - it's all about the small details!

As you can see from this picture, the marks from where the original 200-year old staircase was fitted are still very much evident on the walls.

This is a subtle feature in the new stairway; a reminder of the past.

'Teolaí' is the Irish word for cosy and it's just the weather to relax in a rocking chair by the stove in a traditional Irish home.

The fireplace is the heart of the home. The pine beam is a common feature in a traditional fireplace.

Meadow View Farmhouse is nestled in the shadow of the famous Devil’s Bit mountain which rises to 480 metres.

Today was a beautiful crisp day for a hike up there! 🍂

This is a stunning walk which you can trek on horseback also with Devil's Bit Pony Trekking.

According to local legend, the mountain is named because the devil took a bite out of it. He broke his teeth taking this bite and spat the Rock of Cashel from his mouth to where it now stands!
