Happy Hiking Kerry

Happy Hiking Kerry Feel good, energised and happy with guided walks/hikes in Kerry. All levels of fitness catered for Routes tailored to all abilities.

Simply put, I love being outdoors enjoying all that the Irish countryside has to offer but most especially in the Kingdom of Kerry. Born and bred in Tralee I have been so lucky to have such a beautiful landscape on my doorstep from quiet sandy beaches, woods, valleys, glens and rugged hills and mountains with an abundance of wild flora and fauna. For over 35 years my passion has been exploring the

se hills and mountains. I absolutely love the sights, colours, sounds and scents to be experienced even on the wettest of days. What I have learned is that there is so much fun, adventure and feel good factor to be had....yes, even after trudging up that hill, and sloshing through the bogs.... leaving me feeling happy, alive, healthy and invigorated. As a qualified Tour Guide, Happy Hiking Kerry grew from this passion and wanting to share it with as many people as possible. My approach is that "Everyone can do it....no matter what your fitness"

Allow me to help you experience and enjoy that "Feel Good factor" by joining me exploring the many tracks, trails, hills and mountains in Kerry. And remember:
"There is no such thing as bad weather........ just bad gear!!"

Re-imaging Brigid of Ireland - 1500th Anniversary
1st February - St.Brigid’s Day
heralding the beginning of Springtime in Celtic times.
A celebration of our golden monasticism and Celtic Deities.

‘Brigid’ - the most celebrated Irish Woman - as a Christian - Abbess of Kildare, Celtic Brigid - mythical Goddess of fertility, Brigid - Celtic Goddess of healing - Imbolc.

Re-imagining our Celtic past, honouring our music, song, poetry, pilgrimage, and unique Irish dance in the ancient hinterland of Sliabh Luachra, where traditions of music and culture have been preserved for 2000 years. Brigid travels from the Hill of Tara to Cathair Crobh Dearg - The City of Shrone, a stone ringfort - believed it has been a place of continual devotion and worship over several millennia - the oldest in Europe!. She finally unites with the Goddess AnĂș on the summit of the Paps of AnĂș. (grateful thanks to Lumen Yoga - Breda O'Farrell - the Perfect Brigid🙏

Another one of my favourite Kerry walks....Ventry to Dun Chaoin along the Di**le Way. I've noticed however on recent hikes that the majority of people enjoying this beautiful landscape are international visitors. So lovely to meet you all, but I would love to share these fabulous walks and hikes with Irish visitors also. Email, phone or text me if you would like to explore the by-ways of County Kerry. All levels of fitness catered for.

That time of year again, when the pretty yellow Dandelion flowers are appearing, just at the time when some Bees are waking from their Winter slumber, and are out and about foraging for food.

So before you get the lawnmower and the dreaded weedkiller out, spare a thought for our hungry little bees. Dandelions are among the earliest spring flowers and provide a valuable food source for our little buzzing friends.

More than half of Ireland’s bee species have undergone substantial declines in their numbers since 1980. The distribution of 42 species has declined by more than 50%. 30% of the Irish species are threatened with extinction. Six species are critically endangered, 10 are endangered and 14 species are vulnerable.

Loss of natural and semi-natural habitats has been a key driver in pollinator declines. Declines in wildflowers are largely due to changing farming practice. Insecticides, herbicides and fungicides are applied to crops, but reach the pollinators through pollen, nectar, and through the air, water or soil.

It is not just intensified agriculture, as everyone has a role to play.
Our tendency to tidy up the landscape rather than allowing wildflowers to grow along roadsides, canal and riverside track ways, field margins, and in parks and gardens is also playing a role in fewer of these resources being available.

Instead of seeing dandelions and our other lovely wild flowers as weeds, enjoy them and the biodiversity they are part of and help to create, just let them bee.

FREE ENTRY to Casement in Kerry exhibition Good Friday 7th April.

Roger Casement’s landing at Banna Strand on Good Friday 1916 was a pivotal event in the lead up to the rebellion that broke out in Dublin a few days later.

Our exhibition guides you through Casement’s fascinating life journey: from crown servant and celebrated international humanitarian to doomed revolutionary. We explore the repercussions of his brief sojourn in Kerry and its impact on local people, how the failure of his gun running mission affected The Rising, and the way his trial for High Treason was prosecuted in London.

Tracing this remarkable man’s legacy, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to view objects that have never been displayed before. ‘Casement in Kerry: a revolutionary journey’ marks the centenary of the Easter Rising and makes an important contribution to the national commemoration.

***Glenmalure’s ‘Zig-Zags’ Walking Trail Closed to the Public***

The well-known Zig-Zags walking track in Glenmalure has been closed to the public following an assault carried out on the landowner. The popular route, which is located entirely on private lands, provided access from the base of Carrawaystick Waterfall towards Lugnaquilla.
The Zig-Zags was an ‘Agreed Access Route’, facilitated through a formal Permissive Access Agreement between the landowner, Pat Dunne and County Wicklow Partnership. First developed in 2007, Pat was one of the first landowners in the country to permit an agreed access route across his lands and is widely respected among the recreational community for his efforts.
However, following a physical incident with a hiker on the 19th March, Pat and the Dunne family have taken the difficult decision to close public access with immediate effect.
Speaking about the closure Pat Dunne said ‘I want it known that for the last 16 years we have permitted open access to Lugnaquilla via the Zig Zags. The track and open mountain lands immediately above are private property. The only request in return for open access to our land was that NO DOGS were brought onto the mountain due to the disturbance they can cause to livestock. It is not an unreasonable request as we have had many instances of sheep being mauled by dogs on the mountain’.
He continued ‘However, over the years we have had many instances of verbal abuse with people as they ignored signage asking that dogs were not brought onto our lands. In one case this even resulted in a threat that our house “would be burnt down”’.
Pat said ‘The final straw came on Sunday 19th March at 11.10am when after repeatedly asking a man and a youth accompanying him to not bring their three dogs onto the track, he physically assaulted me, knocking me to the ground, before continuing up the mountain with the dogs’.
‘It is because of this that we have decided to revoke the permissive access agreement and close the trail to the public with immediate effect’.
Commenting on the closure Aaron Byrne, Rural Recreation Officer with County Wicklow Partnership added ‘County Wicklow Partnership completely support the Dunne family in their decision. The success of The Walks Scheme and access routes are evident all over the country and that’s based on cooperation between landowners and recreational users. The actions of this particular individual are completely unacceptable. The closure of the trail will come as a huge blow to all the recreational users who benefitted from the goodwill of the Dunne family and enjoyed access to the mountains through their lands.’
