In this postcard image from c1920 we see the old Galway to Clifden railway viaduct over the Corrib. The railway ran from c1891 until 1936.

But did you ever wonder where the name of Galway and its county came from?

The translation of the Irish name of the river Corrib is Galway river i.e. from Gaillimh. In Irish it is sometimes called An Ghaillimh ("the Galway") and also incorrectly called Abhainn na Coiribe.

The legend concerning its naming states that it was called after Gaillimh inion Breasail, the daughter of a Fir Bolg chieftain who drowned in the river. The word Gaillimh is believed to mean "stony" as in "stony river". The commonly held myth that the city takes its name from the Irish word Gallaibh, "foreigners" i.e. "the town of the foreigners" (from Gall, a foreigner) is incorrect as the name Gaillimh was applied to the river first and then later onto the town. Indeed, the earliest settlement at Galway was called Dún Bhun na Gaillimhe, or "the fort at the end of the Galway (river)".

The river gave its name to the town, which grew to a city, and from c. 1570 onwards, the city gave its name to the county.

Have people not heard of leave no trace 🤦‍♂️
We’re constantly picking up rubbish after people down here at the picnic area.
Last night someone camped here and threw all their cigarette buts and cans everywhere and then left a bin bag of rubbish and their tent here 🤦‍♂️ I’m all for camping, but it’s really not hard to follow the leave no trace principles,

The 7 leave no trace Principles are:

1.Plan Ahead and Prepare
2.Be Considerate of Others
3.Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife
4.Travel and Camp on Durable Ground
5.Leave What You Find
6.Dispose of Waste properly
7.Minimise the Effects of Fire

Time to shed light on something important: This one-of-a-kind, historic lighthouse on the shores of Lough Corrib is in danger of falling down if repair work is not carried out.

Built in the 1700's, Ballycurrin Lighthouse is located on the Galway/Mayo border and there is no other inshore lighthouse like it in Europe. The lighthouse preservation project is going before the Lough Corrib Navigation Trustees tomorrow and it is my sincere hope that they will take it on 🙏
