Early in 2020 Lauragh Community Council obtained planning permission to construct an "Eco shelter" timber framed, turf roofed bus stop/cycle storage unit in Lauragh, between the community noticeboard and the Church. This will provide covered seating space for children waiting for the school bus, lockable cycle storage and a bus stop for Bus Eireann passengers. Funding was granted last year by the Leader project. There will also be pollinator friendly planting, a drinking water fountain and we have now applied for funding for bench seating alongside the shelter. Despite delays caused by Covid, the work has been ongoing, and we are grateful to Oliver Holbein who has kindly built a high-spec timber framed shelter for us. Within the next few weeks, you will see the shelter being erected!

Sheep on the move this evening on the way home... amazing to watch the three sheepdogs weave around the flock and then glue themselves to the ground at the farmer's command, pausing while he opened the gate, before resuming their gentle nudging and getting the ladies up the field.

This is an online Zoom meeting about our amazing night skies here in South Kerry.

Do you have an interest in the skies above us? Those of us who live or spend time in South Kerry are privileged to have access to some of the clearest skies in the world- in theory, although todays clouds may lead you to believe otherwise! When it comes to light pollution, we are in one of the least light polluted places in the world which has allowed the Kerry International Dark Sky reserve to receive Gold Tier Reserve Status. In practical terms this means that South Kerry is an ideal place for budding stargazers and expert astronomers alike to hone their skills.

The second of our highly successful stargazing guides for residents and visitors to the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve takes place next Thursday the 1st of July at 8pm. Learn what to look out for in upcoming weeks and hear from Steve Lynott of Kerry Dark Sky Tourism and John Flannery of the Irish Astronomical Association.

Summer days are on the way. We often joke that we have our summer in April, to get it out of the way early in the year. So I'm expecting scorchio sunshine next week or the week after. We will have to enjoy it in our own gardens or within our 5k, but when you live on Beara that really isn't such a chore.

💚Absolutely breathtaking views here. I just heard myself gasp when I got out of the car & looked into the Map
Lauragh is on the Beara Peninsula about 13 miles from Kenmare. It's one of the last villages in Kerry before entering County Cork and Castletown Bearhaven. The other entry into Cork is through the Healy Pass offering spectacular views of Glanmore Lake. Also in the area there is Derreen House and gardens. The area is a walkers paradise with the Beara Way passing through the village as well as plenty of quiet roads. 💚

Autumn is here. We are so lucky to have lots of red squirrels here in Beara, they are my favourite wild animal... i love to see them scurry across the road, magnificent tail bobbing as they race back to the woods and safety. What's your favourite wild animal?

This is Buddy, the biggest of our three dogs. We call him The Pony. He is a mix of German Shepherd & Great Dane. He is that stereotypical gentle giant, loves to chase sticks (nearly dies of excitement if you kick a pebble while walking along) and is terrified of anything bigger than he is (sheep, cows, our car trailer, our BBQ....) He is quite shy and sombre until you throw a stick. Take a look in our Instagram highlights to see his amazing jumps! 🐕💚 PS as you can tell from the picture, cheese is his greatest weakness 🧀

1.The Celts first landed in Ireland at Garnish near the westernmost end of the peninsula.

2. The Beara Peninsula was named after a Spanish princess, Princess Beara.

3. The highest waterfall in Ireland and the UK is the Mare's Tail in Adrigole.
