Blacksod Lighthouse, after sunset.
Guided walking tours in Mayo, Connemara and The Burren, the South of France and Catalunya. Je parle français. Email me on [email protected].

I lead small groups on guided walking holidays in rural County Mayo, Connemara and The Burren, on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way. My guided walking tours explore the wild landscapes and wonderful culture of the West of Ireland. Once a year, I bring a walking group to the South of France in May, Catalunya in September and a birdwatching group to the East of Poland in springtime.

OK folks,
Andalucia is a thing!
8 nights from 7 - 15 April 2025.
Fab hiking, fab food, fab wine, fab culture, fab history, fab cities.
Wait, what, did you say cities?
Yep, 2 nights each in Málaga and Granada, along with great countryside walking.
Hey, a change is as good as a rest and these are truly great cities!

Burren, Cliffs, Black Head.
Roundstone, Inis Mór, Doolin.
In August 2014, my first group of Italians arrived in Knock for a great week in beautiful weather.
10 years later, this year's group arrived today in, frankly, brutal weather ...
Now available for booking for May 2025 on my website is Barry's Burren Walking Weekend.
Visit barrysguidedtours.com and read about this wonderful 4 nights in Doolin and 3.5 days of walking in Ireland's most unique landscape, full of early summer wildflowers and great off-road trails.
We were blessed with great weather for our 11-hr hike of the Bangor Trail on Sat.
A lovely group of 10 walkers enjoyed the peace and tranquility of this unique old 25-km drovers' track.
It didn't even rain, apart from a few spits early on.
I was in the glorious south of France last week.
The weather was surprisingly mixed, with mostly cloudy days and only 1 or 2 of the usual full sunshine.
But just fab, as always.
The wonderful panorama from the top of Benlevy in Joyce Country, wihtin the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark Project.
At just 418m, this is a modest enough mountain. However, hikers need to be aware that a thick fog/mist can descend, making navigation tricky around the flattish, boggy relatively featureless top.
Bring your compass and know how to use it.
So we completed The Bangor Trail at the weekend, in exactly 10 hours.
Weather-wise, it was a mixed day, but mostly fine, with cloud cover, only spits of rain and plenty wind to keep the dreaded midgies down.
A wonderful, demanding hike in unrelentingly wet underfoot conditions.
The Bangor Trail tomorrow...
Cross Abbey, on The Mullet Peninsula.
A beautiful little site with great views and the start point for a pleasant easy 6k walk.
Will there be this much water for our trek along The Bangor Trail this Saturday, me wonders ...
I'll soon have the details for my Andalucia Tour in April 2025.
Let me know if you'd be interested in a week of stupendous history, culture, food, wine and hiking.
Two great cities.
Two great smaller destinations.
Moderate level hiking.
No mountains.
Longest day of hiking is only 12km!
Limited number of single bookings available.
Dún Briste on a sunny day.
Beautiful Bog Cotton from this afternoon out on the, eh, bog.
Marsh Cinquefoil (cnó léana), by Lough Corrib. For me, one of our most beautiful flowers.
West Mayo sunset, June.
A fortnight already since our gorgeous week hiking in France.
We enjoyed 4 magical days of hiking in The Burren last weekend.
And suddenly, and wonderfully, it's already Barry's Burren Walking Weekend time.
Woohoo!
And what a wonderful week of great hiking we had in France.
A truly lovely group of people enjoyed the scenery, food, wine and each other's company.
Each month of May, I am lucky enough to show some guests the beauty of the deep, rural south of France, retracing steps that myself and my family have taken in the past. I remember when our kids played in this gorgeous village and we ate in the same restaurant as we will tonight.
Looking down on the Doolough Valley, from Barrclashcame in the Sheeffry Hills, with Mweelrea rising to the right and the Killary fjord just about visible in the far distance.
What a lovely testimonial I recently received by email.
Thanks a million, D.
At Downpatrick Head.
A sound of the summer to come.
Get outside into boggy, marshy terrain and see if you can hear the magical sound of the male Snipe drumming.
Typically, but not limited to, around dusk or dawn.
Listen carefully.
From Birdwatch Ireland's website : "During display flights over the nesting territory, they make an eerie goat bleating sound - this is called drumming and it is produced by stiff feathers sticking out at the tail sides, which vibrate as the bird flies in a roller coaster pattern in the sky."
What an absolute stunner this Yellow Bee-orchid is.
Pictured in Málaga province last week, this Ophrys lutea is a cousin of our own beautiful Bee-orchid (Ophrys apifera), pictured on Inis Meáin last summer (right).

Bottlenose dolphins entertained us on the way out to beautiful Iniskea one day several years ago. Watch til the end!
People ask me, perfectly reasonably, why I sometimes announce overseas tours without exact dates. Well, let me tell you. First, Ryanair. This autumn / winter in particular, everybody's favourite airline was very slow to announce its spring / summer 2024 schedules for certain routes, including ones I use. That means I can't set dates when I'd like to. Second, I take my overseas tours very personally. I appreciate hugely that people are willing to spend their hard-earned money on coming on a walking holiday with Barry's Guided Tours. I try to make the trip as memorable as possible. However, in other countries, they can be much slower than we in Ireland to set the dates of their annual events, for example. That means I can't set dates when I'd like to. This video gives a glimpse of a wonderful festival I try to include in my Catalunya Walking Week. I tend to wait until I know when exactly it is taking place, so we can get to enjoy it, if at all possible. Third, the small, rural accommodation providers I like to stay with tend to close completely during winter. This means, as has happened with my France 2024 tour, that by the time Ryanair eventually organised its flights, it had become difficult to get responses from my accommodation partners on whether they have the rooms I need whn I need them ... And that, dear friends, is why I can't set dates when I'd like to! It's like trying to do a jigsaw blindfolded, while juggling the pieces in the air...
Yesterday, I visited the supposed crannóg at Srahrevagh (listed as "possible" in the 1996 Record of Monuments and Places, by the National Monuments and Historic Properties Service). I'm neither archaeologist nor expert, but I think it might be a flooded ringfort. If an expert wants to confirm that it is indeed a crannóg, I'd be happy to accept that.
Just 1 room still available (2 people, a couple or sharing) for my guided walking week in the South of France next May. Request the brochure by message if interested. Our small group enjoys great scenery, woodlands, picture-postcard villages, fab food, wine and company! (unfortunately, single occupancy is not available on this trip) More at https://barrysguidedtours.com/france-guided-walking-week/
