We had a lovely introduction to The Green One today at Grow HQ. The opera will be performed this coming Fri, Sat & Sun as part of the Imagine Arts Festival at Christ Church Cathedral.

The libretto for The Green One is exceptionally good - clear, compressed, lucid, powerful, accessible, lyrical, brilliant. I imagine it took a long time to write and yet the finished product (the surest signal of perfection) looks like it was effortless to write. Carlo Gebler.

The Waterford Kite Brooch,

on display at Reginald's Tower, is one of Ireland's finest pieces of late 11th to early 12th century secular metalwork, probably commissioned by a layperson and made locally. It is one of the finest of the fourteen kite-shaped brooches found to date in Ireland, most of which are intact. Made of a hollow cast silver box and decorated with sumptuous gold filigree, impressed gold foil, amethyst-coloured cabochon (polished without being cut into fraglets) glass studs and niello (a black compound used in gold and silver work), it was made to close a cloak. It had a long pin on the back which remains together with a small hinge to which it was attatched.

Irish law stipulated that people had to wear brooches appropriate to their status.
