Tzedek on Ice! “Zionism and Dreams Coming True!”
We were not surprised when we received a phone call from the Kofsky family from Massachusetts, asking us to plan a Bar Mitzvah trip for Tzedek, their third son. We remembered this dear family from a number of years ago, when their middle son, Hillel, celebrated his own Bar Mitzvah in Israel. The Kofsky’s added, “You should just know that Tzedek’s dream is to play ice hockey in Israel”. Were they sure they wanted a trip to Israel and not to Canada?
I, together with my Israel Connection Tours staff members, woke up before dawn on last Friday in order to join the family and the ice hockey teams in Metula, who took part in a tough, energetic game on the ice. It’s a nice story, but there’s so much more than that.
The Kofsky’s request led to us meeting Levav Weinberg, a coach in Macabi’s Metula Youth Ice Hockey Club https://www.facebook.com/groups/75395945673/ . My lack of knowledge on the topic of ice hockey resulted in my calling Lavav, who immediately said, “If Tzedek wants to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah in Israel at a ice hockey game, we will fulfill his dream together with you.” It’s hard not to be moved by Lavav’s involvement and caring. Lavav recruited the Metula Youth Ice Hockey Club, the Canada Centre מרכז קנדה, which closed to the public in order to strengthen the ice, and the youth hockey teams.
Lavav remained calm when the Canada Centre’s ice compressor broke down two days before the event and the ice rink turned into a swimming pool. He moved heaven and earth in order to find a solution including the arranging as a backup the ice center in Yarka. In the end, Lavav found a solution at the Canada Centre and the game was on!
While we were there, we met a member of the para-athletics and we discovered that the club also has a team of players with disabilities and that they are fundraising in order to fly the team to a huge event in Las Vegas. It was heartwarming to see the smile on Tzedek’s face and to make another dream come true.
