Stella Maris Monastery

It is a Latin church located at the city of Haifa on the slopes of Mount Carmel, which was built in the nineteenth century. This church is distinguished by its simple construction and complex design to produce an interesting architectural complex. Looking at its beautiful dome that decorated with colorful drawings and at the Latin religious writings that the dome and the inner hall are decorated with leaves an emotive impact in the hearts of its visitors, and provides a comfortable and spiritual atmosphere that fills the place, and also provides an amazing view of Haifa.
This magnificent church also known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel Monastery, it is believed that it includes a cave in which the Prophet Elias stayed according to popular traditions. In the Byzantine era a group of monks lived in Elias cave, and that was known from the scripts that were found in the cave. Also the sources mentioned that the two prophets Elias and Elisha taught their students the religion in the School of the Prophets which known as Maqam al Khidr today.
In the year of 1631 they established this holy church, and it was there until the year of 1761 when the ottoman governor Zahir Al Omar ordered to demolish the monastery. Then a new church was constructed in the byzantine era, but it was severely damaged Napoleon’s 1799 campaign. After that in the year 1821 this damaged church was totally destroyed by the order of ottoman governor Abdallah Pasha.
At the end this current church and monastery was built in the year of 1836. Three years later the head of the catholic church Pope Gregory gave this architectural complex the title of Minor Basilica, and it is now known as Stella Maris, which means the Star of the Sea
