The abbey of the Dormition is an abbey and the name of a Benedictine community in Jerusalem on Mount Zion on the outer side of the ancient city walls, near the Zion Gate.
According to the tradition of the region, it was in this place, near the place of the Last Supper, that the Virgin Mary died. In Orthodoxy and Catholicism, and also in the language of the Bible, the "death " is usually called a "sleep " or "Dormition", and that is where the original name of the monastery arose, and the church was called the Basilica of the Assumption (or the Basilica of the Dormition).
