I love Sukkot. Sitting outside in the nice outdoor air with a breeze and sun at high noon. The weather is cooling off but it's not raining (we don't want rain during this holiday). Over the first day of the holiday, we had 3 of our kids with a total of 10 of their kids. It was so much fun. One set of grandchildren made a 30-meter/90 feet paper chain (photo next week). Others hung the decorations that survived last year's short but heavy rain. We set up the tables. We can sit up to 24 comfortably and thus only 3 kids came. We used to have my husband's family come, but we just can't swing that anymore. Our balcony is only so big. Today another daughter came with her kids, one of whom is two today. We had lunch and then had a birthday party with cake and candles, junk food and of course a present opening ceremony. Elia was so excited and happy to spend time with his cousins, one of which is only 2 months older than him. I was told being a grandmother is the best thing and boy is that true. We truly enjoy their visits and help when possible. Next week will be fun with some of the kids. Each day a different a different adventure, but first Shabbat with 2 kids and 4 grandchildren. Let noise perhaps, but I don't mind it - it keeps me going during these trying times of war. We have plenty of space for everyone in our shelter, but hopefully, we won't need to act on that. Shabbat Shalom!

One year ago today October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked Israel and massacred over 1200 innocent civilians. It changed the country and immediately went into a 7-front war. This has caused most international airlines to stop flying to Israel. El Al, Israel's national carrier still flies daily around the world. It is equipped with anti-missile technology keeping the passengers safe. Tourism has come literally to a halt and thus I have not been guiding for the past year. Sure some tourists are visiting. Mostly to volunteer which is greatly appreciated on farms that have lost workers, the owners are in the army, or worse -- have lost their lives. It may not be ideal to come to Israel now. But if you want to support the country it's possible to volunteer at a variety of venues. Visit the site of the Nova festival and hear testimonies of survivors. This is important so that the world and especially the Jewish nation knows what happened and understands that this cannot happen again. If you are planning a trip, be in touch and I will be happy to help you out. Photo just for the beauty of it.

To all my relatives and friends who have been hurt by hurricane Helene, I hope that damage was minimal and that your lives have not been distrptive. I only today realized what you have been going through . I'm just a little wrapped up with my local situation. Stay safe!

The new year begins this evening. Wishing you all Shana Tova! May you be written and sealed in the Book of Life. May the enemies of the Jewish people understand that Israel is here to stay and we have the higher power on our side.

Message to U.S. Citizens: U.S. Embassy Jerusalem (May 31, 2024)

Location: Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza

Subject: Pilot Phase of Israeli Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA-IL) System to Begin June 1, 2024 for U.S. Citizens

From June 1, 2024 toJuly 31, 2024, the ETA-IL system will open for application submissions as a pilot program only for U.S. and German citizens (those holding valid U.S. and German passports). During the pilot phase, submitting an application will be voluntary and free. Beginning August 1, 2024, all travelers to Israel must have a valid visa or ETA-IL approval before traveling to Israel, and it will cost 25 shekels to submit the application.

The ETA-IL website (https://israel-entry.piba.gov.il/) is already live, but no applications can be submitted until June 1, 2024. There are answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) on the website.

If this is a pilot phase and voluntary, why should I submit an application?

Beginning August 1, 2024, all U.S. citizen travelers to Israel must have a valid visa or ETA-IL approval before traveling to Israel. ETA-IL authorizations are valid for 2 years (unless you get a new passport), and, during the pilot phase, there is no fee. Beginning August 1, it will cost 25 shekels to submit an application.

Travelers who land at Ben Gurion Airport and have an approved ETA-IL will be able to proceed directly to border control e-gates without going to border control officers if they receive a permit from an automated border control kiosk.

I am a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen and want to travel to Israel. Must I complete an ETA-IL application?

U.S.-Israeli citizens do not need to submit an ETA-IL application and should depart the United States on their U.S. passport and enter Israel on their Israeli passport.

What do I do if my ETA-IL application is denied?

If you are denied, you will be directed to contact the Israeli authorities by email([email protected]) for next steps.

Actions to Take:

· All U.S. citizens should enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and ensure you can be located in an emergency.

· Refer to our website for the latest Alerts and Messages for U.S. citizens.

· Refer to our country information sheet for updated information on entry/exit requirements and safety/security information.

Another week of crazy weather and crazy news about the war in Israel. It was warm this week up into the 70'sF/20'sC, rainy on the single day off (municipal election day), and sunny all other days. There is a trickle of tourism coming in but with much of the country within range of attack, there are limited areas to visit.

Yesterday a convoy of humanitarian aid was swarmed by starving Palestinians in Gaza. Unfortunately, due to the large numbers of people, many were trampled and some run over by the trucks. It appears that militants shot into the crowd injuring/killing some of the civilians. Were they all civilians? Hard to tell as Hamas dresses in civilian clothes. What is a fact is that the Israeli army was not in the area where this happened, as seen in IDF footage, so don't be drawn in by inaccurate media commentary. This subject enrages me, as the world believes the Hamas terror organization but puts doubt on what Israel says. Crazy notion but true.

Shabbat Shalom!

Who Died at Auschwitz

With what is happening in the Middle East now I feel this should be passed along ...

Who really died at Auschwitz?

What really died at Auschwitz? Here's an interesting viewpoint. The following is a copy of an article written by Spanish writer Sebastian Vilar Rodriguez and published in a Spanish newspaper. It doesn't take much imagination to extrapolate the message to the rest of Europe, and possibly to the rest of the world.

I walked down the streets in Barcelona and suddenly discovered a terrible truth: Europe died in Auschwitz. We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims. In Auschwitz we burned a group of people who represented culture, thought, creativity, and talent.

We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who made great contributions to the world, and thus changed the world.

The contribution of today’s Jewish people is felt in all areas of life: science, art, international trade, and above all, as the conscience of the world. Look at any donors’ board at any symphony, art museum, theatre, art gallery, science center, etc. You will see many, many, Jewish surnames.

These are the people who were burned. Of the 6,000,000 who died, how many would have grown up to be gifted musicians, doctors, artists, and philanthropists?

And under the pretense of tolerance, and because we wanted to prove to ourselves that we were cured of the diseases of racism and bigotry, Europe opened our gates to 20 million Muslims, who brought us stupidity and ignorance, religious extremism and lack of tolerance, crime and poverty, due to an unwillingness to work and support their families with pride.

They have blown up our trains and turned our beautiful Spanish cities into the third world, drowning in filth and crime. Shut up in the apartments they receive free from the government, they plan the murder and destruction of their naive hosts.

And thus, in our misery, we have exchanged culture for fanatical hatred, creative skill for destructive skill, intelligence for backwardness and superstition. We have exchanged the pursuit of peace of the Jews of Europe and their talent for a better future for their children, their determined clinging to life because life is holy, for those who pursue death, for people consumed by the desire for death for themselves and others, for our children and theirs. What a terrible mistake was made by miserable Europe.

Recently, the UK debated whether to remove The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it “offends” the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. It is not removed as yet. However, this is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving in to it.

It is now approximately seventy years after the Second World War in Europe ended. This email is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, twenty million Russians, ten million Christians, and nineteen-hundred Catholic priests who were murdered, r***d, burned, starved, beaten, experimented on and humiliated. Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming The Holocaust to be “a myth,” it is imperative to make sure the world "never forgets."

This email is intended to reach 400 million people. Be a link in the memorial chain and help distribute this around the world.

How many years will it be before the attack on the World Trade Center “NEVER HAPPENED” because it offends some Muslim in the United States? If our Judeo-Christian heritage is offensive to Muslims, they should pack up and move to Iran, Iraq or some other Muslim country.

Please do not just delete this message; it will take only a minute to pass this along. We must wake up America, England, Australia and Europe before it's too late.

When did you last visit the Tower of David Museum in Jerusalem? Never? Well don't miss it on your next visit. The newly renovated musuem is mostly wheelchair accessible with new galleries, interactive with touch screens, film, models and fun building apps. Located right into Jaffa Gate it should be on anyone's itinerary when visiting the Old City of Jerusalem.

The summer heat is on in Israel. With temperatures in the upper 90'sF/30'sC it is nice to be able to visit places indoors or where there is water. The question is which suites you more. Sure you can go to the beach and fry in the sun. The Mediterrean beaches of Israel are beautiful, but there are jelly-fish you may not want to meet. You could visit the Sea of Galilee/Kinneret and enjoy the cool waters, but the beaches are rocking and not so comfortable to walk/sit on. The Jordan River has cool waters and rafting down the river whether for an hour or two will help you cool off when the next raft decides to paddle some water on you -- all in fun. But did you know that there are other bodies of water, smaller yet just as refreshing? Ein Fashcha at the Dead Sea, Nachal Daliyot/Majersa in the north, Gan Hashlosha/Sachne near Beit Shean, Tel Dan in the far north, Nachal Hakibbutzim near Beit Shean, Nachal Kziv in the northwest, Ein Gedi and Ein Boqek near the Dead Sea and several other smaller springs throughout the country. Keep cool is the name of the game in this heat. Just keep your hat on and drink several liters of water a day and you will have a great time and keep healthy.

This week was so cold with heavy rains and very noisy thunderstorms. Not so great for touring around. But at the end of any rainbow the sun shines. The Hermon shines its snow above the Galilee and the Sea of Galilee is full of water and Zfat is surrounded by green. But most of all the sun shines reminding us of how wonderful nature is and what a beautiful country Israel is.

Israel desalinates nearly 80% of its drinking water, the abundance allows for water to glow to the Sea of Galilee and down the Jordan River and beyond.
