Situated at the northern slopes of Mount Carmel along the Mediterranean coastline, lies the cosmopolitan city of Haifa. Haifa is home to members of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, among them Israeli Jews, Arab Christians, Muslims and members of the Baha’i faith-Haifa being a pilgrim center to the latter. Present day Haifa is not only an exuberant industrial city engaging in shipbuilding, food-processing, textile and cement production, but is also home to many museums, theatres and two prominent academic institutions- the Technion and The University of Haifa, the former being the oldest and top-ranked university in Israel and the Middle East. At the top of Mount Carmel lies the Cave of Elijah, the grotto where the prophet Elijah is believed to have prayed before his confrontation with the priests of the Baal. One of the city’s great highlights are the Famous Bahai Terraces, among the world’s most beautiful and outstanding gardens. At the foot of the Baha’i World Center, a quaint alley of Israel’s first German Colony welcomes visitors into lovely cafes, boutiques and bars.
