If you love Tel Aviv like I do or just want to know more about the city, it’s origins and diversity then this little museum is a must see! Tucked away on quiet, beautiful Bialik Street, the museum is situated in the first Tel Aviv municipal building, originally built as a hotel. The building itself is an architectural delight, while the interior has been redesigned with ultra modern, interactive exhibits accessible in English. If you have a couple of hours free in Tel Aviv, visit the Tel Aviv City Museum. I would be happy to include a stop there on a tour of Tel Aviv. #מוזיאוןהעירתלאביב 🇮🇱❤️

It’s not a tour I ever thought I would be conducting when I became a tour guide but it is one I have been taken people on over the last few months. This week I took a couple from London and their Israeli relative to see the October 7th sites. We visited the Nova Festival site, car graveyard, and sites in the town of Sderot. These tours are never just doom and gloom however. We stopped at Shuva, where three brothers have been organizing food and a rest stop for soldiers on their way in and out of Gaza. We heard about the resilience of the people of Sderot and saw a movie about the citizens defending their city on that fateful day. It may not be the most fun tour you’ll have in Israel but it will be one of the most enlightening ones. 🇮🇱❤️

I’m in Eilat for a long weekend of concerts and too much food. In March of 1948 two army units rushed towards the southern tip of the Negev desert at the edge of the Red Sea to control the area for the newly born State of Israel, fighting Jordanian troops along the way. This concluded the War of independence. There was nothing here. Talk about making the desert bloom! 🇮🇱

I have fond memories as a kid of my Ukrainian grandfather making us latkes (potato pancakes) for Hanukkah. Today I did the same for my family in the hope that my Israeli grandchildren will have good memories of their American Saba doing the same for them. It’s all about passing on family traditions.Happy Hanukkah, חנוכה שמח Hanukkah Sameah

While in the Druze village of Julis in the Galilee region we stopped at one of the most unique (and delicious) restaurants in Israel -Noor. It’s unique both because it is a kosher restaurant in a Druze village and because of the story behind it. The owner is a Druze woman named Basma Hino, who is an Israel army widow. When war broke out on October 7, 2023, Basma and her son Noor wanted to cook for her late husband’s unit. This expanded to feeding other soldiers too. Being the patriot she is she turned the restaurant into a kosher restaurant so she could feed all types of Israeli soldiers. For those of us who keep kosher the restaurant gives us a chance to sample Druze cuisine. No matter who you are and what you eat, Basma and the Noor restaurant should be supported for the good work done and the inclusiveness shown. Oh, did I mention the food is delicious? 🇮🇱❤️

Now that it is safe again to travel in northern Israel, throngs of Israelis are doing just that. Not to be outdone, my wife and I spent the day in the Druze village of Julis. The Druze are an Arabic speaking, non-Muslim minority known for their friendliness and patriotism. We visited the El Mona Gardens, which is the quirkiest park I’ve ever encountered. It’s in a private backyard of a Druze family who over the years planted many exotic trees and collected odds and ends for decoration. It is truly a delight! After visiting the garden we headed off to the Noor restaurant which deserves a post of its own. 🇮🇱❤️

The Herodian Quarter is really a must see when visiting the Old City of Jerusalem. The site has recently been reopened after three years of renovations. This is where the rich and famous (that means priestly class) lived 2000 years ago until the destruction of the city by the Romans in 70CE. The buildings above the quarter were destroyed by the Jordanians after they occupied this part of the city in 1948. When Israel liberated the old city in 1967 and started to clear out the rubble they found the Jewish neighbourhood which had been hidden for millennia. And what a discovery it was! But don’t take my word for it, let me take you there on a tour.

Hoping that the current ceasefire will last and tourists will start returning to Israel, a group of us, all tour guides, decided to see what was going on at the City of David, the archaeological park of ancient Jerusalem. There’s a new, well made movie to see and the changes at the dig of the Shiloah Pool are incredible. We also visited the reopened Herodian Quarter, but that is another post. 🇮🇱❤️

Radar Hill, or Har Adar in Hebrew, was a British radar station during the British Mandate period. During the War of Independence the Israeli Harel Brigade tried twice to take the hill but were repelled by Jordanian, and I’m sorry to say, British forces. The area remained in Jordanian hands until the Six Day War. Today there is a memorial to the soldiers who fell there both in ‘48 and ‘67. Today the hill is surrounded by the beautiful town of Har Adar. One can climb up to the top of the memorial where the views are incredible.

I love taking tourists on a second tour with me and I love guiding at Caesarea. On this past Friday I had the opportunity to take Larry, who I have guided before, to this extraordinary site so it was a perfect day. I met Larry while we were both volunteering on the Sar-El program with the Israeli army. Larry came a second time from the US to volunteer. Kol HaKavod כל הכבוד!

I had the pleasure of guiding returning tourist Andy last week. He specifically wanted to come now during this difficult time to show his support for the country. He had never been to Mount Herzl in Jerusalem before so off we went. Unfortunately we couldn’t see the graves of the prime ministers or presidents due to a ceremony being held but we did view the resting places of Theodore Herzl, and two famous WWII spies from Mandate Palestine caught behind enemy lines, Hannah Szenes and Enzo Sereni. 🇮🇱❤️

I took this photo earlier today at the Assuta Medical Center in Ra’anana. Where ever we go, whatever we do, we remember what happened to us on October 7th 2023 and the hostages still in captivity in Gaza. Am Yisrael Hai. עם ישראל חי. #71023
