According to Eusebius of Caesarea, who records the details , Constantine appointed his mother Helena as Augusta, and gave her unlimited access to the imperial treasury in order to locate the relics of the Christian tradition. In AD 326–28 Helena undertook a trip to Holyland she was 78 years old that time and Jerusalem was still being rebuilt following the destruction caused by Titus in AD 70. Emperor Hadrian had built during the 130s a temple to Venus over the supposed site of Jesus’ tomb near Calvary, and renamed the city Aelia Capitolina. According to Eusebius, “The queen (Helena) ordered the temple torn down at the end of the 4th century and excavations led to the recovery of the “Saint Crosse”. On the site of discovery, Constantine ordered the building of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

After many months of inspections, investigations and tests, 75 works of art belonging to the Terra Sancta Museum arrived to Lisbon, to one of the most famous museums in Portugal, the Calouste Gulbenkian. Museum which from November 2023 until 15th February 2024 will host this exhibition of masterpieces of the Custody of the Holy Land.
The works of art, selected after careful and meticulous work by the team of Professor António Filipe Pimentel – currently the Director of the Gulbenkian Museum and who had the idea of the exhibition – are unique and rare pieces (religious objects, jewellery, ornaments and sacred vestments) donated by the European Royal Households to express their devotion to the Holy Places and support the Custody of the Holy Land. They include a selection of fine liturgical objects in solid silver, such as the Bas-Relief of the Resurrection, given by the Kingdom of Naples in 1736 and the Basin of Pedro II of Braganza, King of Portugal in 1675, used by the Custos of the Holy Land for washing the feet of pilgrims. The Portuguese gifts will occupy the place of honour in this exhibition “The treasure of Kings. Masterpieces from the Museum of the Holy Land”

Trancoso is a small village in the north of Portugal. In the 14th & 15th centuries, it was home to a large and flourishing Jewish community. This came to an end with the arrival of the Inquisition. In 2012 it has honoured its Jewish heritage with the establishment of the Isaac Cardoso Center for Jewish Interpretation and a new synagogue called Beit Mayim Hayim “the House of Living Waters.” The central square is named after Isaac Cardoso Marrano physician and philosopher, born in Trancoso, Portugal. Cardozo studied at Salamanca and was accorded the title of physico mayor “chief physician” by Philip iv. After practicing as a physician for several years at Valladolid, in 1632 he was appointed physician at the royal court of Madrid. his career for the next 15 years was an outstanding achievement. Cardoso was a popular guest in rich circles in Madrid, where he also mixed with many New Christians. After 1640 the position of the New Christians in Spain deteriorated immensely in particularly the Portuguese who lived in Spain suffered mostly. A new inquisitor, Diego de Arce Reinoso, was to act in a very harsh manner, leading thousands of News Christians to leave Spain. Cardozo was actively engaged in campaigning for Judaism. This is known from evidence offered to the Inquisition in 1658, years after his departure from Spain, according to which he tried to persuade Mendez Silva, the royal chronicler, that Judaism was the true faith. In 1648, Cardozo fled to Venice with his brother openly embracing Judaism and taking the name of Isaac. In Venice both brothers joined the Ponentine or Portuguese synagogue, known as the Talmud Torah, which grew considerably following the disappearance of the mainly ex-Converso Ferrara community in 1581. The two brothers received instruction in Judaism. Five years later, in 1652, Cardozo settled in Verona, where he lived for the next 30 years. He lived a quiet life and worked as a doctor and was an active member of the community. Between 1631 and 1640 Cardozo published in Madrid, in Spanish, a number of medical and scientific works.

Gracia Mendes or Gracia Nassi, (1510-1569), also known simply as The Lady (La Señora), was a Portuguese businesswoman, philanthropist, protector of other Portuguese of the Jewish religion who, like her, fled Portugal in the 16th century. Gracia saved hundreds of New Christians and Marranos from death and anti-Semitic persecution. Her benevolence towards other Sephardic Jews was especially evident in Antwerp, where she went to live after leaving Lisbon. Next cities in her escape from the persecutions that were brought against her were Venice, Ferrara and finally Constantinople.

A group of tourists was standing around their guide and I became their target marker.

“You see that man with the baskets? Just right of his head there’s an arch from the Roman period. Just right of his head.”

“But he’s moving, he’s moving!”

I said to myself: “redemption will come only if their guide tells them, ‘You see that arch from the Roman period? It’s not important: but next to it, left down and a bit, there sits a man who’s bought fruit and vegetables for his family.’”
