The Sixth Tale from the North East – Puri and Varanasi

My last day there was very pleasant with a long walk looking for the tanks which are lakes with steps all round where the people do their washing and bathe. Some are s**t holes in which the thought of washing is most unpalatable (but somehow clothes come out sparkling), some are ok, and occasionally one finds a treat as I did this time, tucked away behind the Jagannath temple and in little side streets which had Google Maps foiled. It has a Ladies Changing Room all freshly painted in blue, flower pots and flowers growing all around it and lots of fish. On the way I had met a delightful 72-year old who invited me back to his house for chai which we had sitting on his verandah. His daughter made it but all I saw of her was a hand. He told me some things of interest: India is beginning to get out-of-town supermarkets and this will create enormous problems for all the millions of little stall holders in the bazaars; the banks and mortgage companies are doing what the West so foolishly did by giving 100 percent loans to poor people................To read more click on the below given link

I am a Trustee for an educational charity in Kovalam, a poor fishing village just south of Chennai. I visit each year for a week and then go off wandering. The Fifth Tale from the North East – Puri

This Maharajah’s hotel in Puri is a really special place. Not only is it cheap but the water is boiling and I haven’t had to clean the shower head. And the class of person staying is very conducive to good, long conversations. What a treat! However, this evening the cook said he was going out of his mind because there is no one to cook for, and feeling rather guilty I took a break from Indian and went to a very swish Chinese (all of a fiver). There is a dearth of western tourists. Today I went on a tour to Lake Chilika (1,500 sq kms) which is famous for its birds in winter. I knew there wouldn’t be any around and well over 200 boats taking God knows how many Indian tourists will have scared away all but the hardiest egrets, terns … and one sea eagle (I think)..................To Read more click on the below given link

The Fourth Tale from the North East – Konark and Puri

Had a magical day yesterday, started by cycling to the fishing village to catch the sunrise over the sea and boats. A hive of activity. Six men at each end with poles through ropes struggle to lift the boat and carry it down to the water, with the boat careering down at all angles as some lose their footing (and I do wonder at the number of accidents there must be). Meanwhile, dotted here and there in the slowly-lightening dawn are figures crouching below the high water mark and scoops of sand like giant lugworm casts all over the beach. A few children are scampering around and women brushing their teeth as they stroll to the shop or start on the cooking. I never got round to “Change from 50 Rupees” which was the original title of the first tale. It is one of the many mysteries of Indian shopping: at 8:30 on my way to the temples in Bhubaneswar I purchased two oranges from a lady at a stall on the road. The cost was 15 rupees but I only had 14.5 but she let me off. The First Tale from the North East – Bhubaneswar

The journey has started after a lovely eight days in Kovalam. I was sorry to miss the Panchayat Sports Day on Sunday but I had to get up here in time for a four day tribal tour which had to start on a specified day and I am always cautious about delays on Indian railways.

A 17 hour, 1200 km train journey to Bhubaneswar went remarkably quickly.
