About Assam State Zoo-cum Botanical Garden
The Assam State Zoo is located in the Hengrabari Reserve Forest in the capital city of Guwahati. The zoo occupies an area of 175 hectares which includes the botanical garden spread across an area of 82 hectares. The zoo comprises of a unique diversity of varied flora and fauna species and houses more than 112 species in all. The Guwahati Zoo was established in the year 1957 and was inaugurated and opened to public for the first time in the year 1958.

Owing to its rich fauna, The Assam State Zoo is popularly known as "Green Lung" of the Guwahati city.

Located in the heart of Guwahati city, capital of the state of Assam, N.E. India.
Laid out among the gently undulating Hengerabari hillocks (60-200 MSL).

Kaziranga National Park

In the center of Assam state(india), this park is one of the last areas in eastern India undisturbed by a human presence It is inhabited by the world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as many mammals, including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, and thousands of birds

There are 3 main types of vegetation: alluvial inundated grasslands, tropical wet evergreen forests and tropical semi-evergreen forests. Grasslands predominate in the west, with tall 'elephant' grasses on the higher ground and short grasses on the lower ground surrounding the bheels . They have been maintained by annual flooding and burning over thousands of years. Tropical wet evergreen forests, near Kanchanjhuri, Panbari and Tamulipathar blocks, are dominated by trees. Tropical semi-evergreen forests occur near Baguri, Bimali and Haldibari.

The park contains about fifteen species of India's threatened mammals it harbours the world's largest population of Indian rhinoceros and Indian elephant other mammals include capped langur, a small population of hoolock gibbon, tiger Panthera tigris , leopard, sloth bear, Ganges dolphin, otter, wild boar, water buffalo, gaur, sambar, swamp deer, hog deer and Indian muntjac. Elephants and other animals migrate with the advent of the monsoon and head southwards to the Mikir Hills and beyond to avoid the annual flooding of the national park the numerous water bodies are rich reservoirs of food (including fish) and thousands of migratory birds, representing over 100 species, visit the park seasonally from as far afield as Siberia. There is a grey pelican rookery near Kaziranga Village. Other birds of interest include black-necked stork, lesser adjutant stork, Pallas's fish eagle, grey-headed fish eagle, Bengal florican, swamp partridge, grey peacock-pheasant, great pied hornbill, green imperial pigeon, silver-breasted broadbill and Jerdon's bushchat. The avifauna comprises over 300 species.

Directions: Misa Mach Poora (grilled Shrimps) Recipe
Cooking Directions
STEP 1.
In a bowl, mix together ginger paste, garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, lemon juice, and salt.
STEP 2.
Add the shrimps to the marinade and let them marinate for at least 30 minutes.
STEP 3.
Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
STEP 4.

Panch Phoran Tarkari – Meghalaya
One among the seven sister states, Meghalaya means abode of clouds in Sanskrit. It shares its boundaries with Bangladesh and Assam. The capitla city is Shillong also known as the Scotland of East. Fish, pork and bamboo shoots are some of the ingredients which feature in so many Meghalaya recipes. When I was going through so many recipes, I had a really hard time choosing a simple recipe with available ingredients. Though we get tinned bamboo stalks here, we are not much comfortable with the taste of bamboo shoots. So I didn’t want to buy it again. Then I saw this simple recipe in one of the travel sites. Panch Phoran is the blend of five spices which is very famous in Western and North Western part of India. This uses seeds rather than thier powdered form so the dish will have all the crunchiness of the seeds. Fennel, Mustard, Nigella, Cumin and Fenugreek are the five spices used for making panch phoran. Also called as panch puran, panch phoron, panch putana, this gives a nice flavour to the dish. This is the first time I am using this spice mix and I was surprised by the mild flavour of all the ingredients. Pumpkin was used in the original recipe, but I just skipped it and used only potatoes and egg plant/ brinjal. It made the perfect side dish for the mushroom pulao and we had a wonderful meal..

Ingredients:
Potato-2
Brinjal/ Eggplant-3-4
Oil-2 tbs
Salt-to taste
Fenugreek Seeds-1/2 tsp
Nigella Seeds-1/2 tsp
Mustard Seeds-1/2 tsp
Fennel Seeds-1/2 tsp
Cumin Seeds-1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder-1/2 tsp
Red Chilly Powder-1 tsp
Coriander Leaves-2 tbs
Procedure:
1. Dice potatoes into small cubes. Cut each brinjal into wedges.
2. Heat oil and add the panch phoran mixture.
3. Add the vegetables.
4. Add turmeric, red chilly and salt.
5. Saute on low flame until all the vegetables are cooked. DO not add water.
6. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.

The seven northeastern states are known as the seven sister states of India. These states are- Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura. The term seven sisters of India is often used to refer to these states of northeast. Sikkim is usually called the brother of these states.

The states are known as the seven sisters due to their interdependence and similarity with each other. Another reason behind the term is that the single way to reach these northeastern states is via the Siliguri Corridor, also known as the ‘Chicken Neck’.

Arunachal Pradesh

Speaking literally, Arunachal Pradesh means the land of dawn-lit mountains. It is the largest among the north-eastern states of India. As per NCERT, it became a full-fledged State of the Republic of India on 20 February 1987. Till 20 January 1972, it was known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). Thereafter, it became a Union Territory and renamed as Arunachal Pradesh. An interesting thing to note is that Arunachal Pradesh shares international borders with four countries- Bhutan in the west, Myanmar in the east and Tibet and China in the North. The capital, Itanagar, derives its name from the 14th century CE ‘Ita fort’ (brick fort) located in the capital complex.

Assam

Assam is often regarded as the gateway to the northeastern states. The state is connected to the rest of the country through a land strip called the ‘Chicken’s Neck’, near Siliguri. Assam shares an international border with Bhutan and Bangladesh. Dispur is the capital. According to NCERT, Assam majorly consists of two river valleys: the valley formed by the River Brahmaputra and its tributaries in the north; and the valley formed by the River Barak and its tributaries in the south. Between these two valleys run the long range of hills (Karbi, North Cachar and Barail), which account for much of the state’s greenery and wildlife. It is because of this unique topographical feature that the State is also known as the ‘Land of Red River and Blue Hills’.

Manipur

Manipur, literally, means the ‘Land of Jewels’. On its north, west and south-west, Manipur shares borders with Nagaland, Assam and Mizoram respectively. Imphal is the capital of Manipur. The state consists mainly of two zones, the plain in the central part known as the Imphal Valley and the hills. Meiteis reside in the valley, while the hills are inhabited by tribes such as the Kuki, the Puram, the Tangkhul among others.

Meghalaya

The word ‘Meghalaya’ is made from two terms — ‘megh’ meaning ‘cloud’ and ‘alaya’ meaning ‘abode’ in Sanskrit thus it means the ‘Abode of the Clouds’. As the name suggests, Meghalaya is known for receiving the highest rainfall in India. The state is also well known for its lush hills and mesmerizing waterfalls. On the north and east it is bounded by Assam and to its south and west by Bangladesh. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya. The tribal groups of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo are the inhabitants of the state. Meghalaya was conferred full statehood on 21 January 1972.

Mizoram

Mizoram means ‘Land of the Hill People'. Its capital is Aizawl. It shares an international boundary with Myanmar in the south and east, and Bangladesh in the west. According to NCERT, Following the signing of the historic Memorandum of Settlement between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front in 1986, it was granted statehood on 20th February 1987. Mizoram has the highest concentration of tribal people among all states in India.

Nagaland

Nagaland is another seven sister state. It shares its border with Assam and Myanmar in the west, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam in the north and Manipur in the south. Its capital is Kohima. As per NCERT, at the time of independence of India in 1947, Nagaland remained as a part of Assam province. In 1957, the Naga Hill district of Assam and the Tuensang frontier were united and formed a single administrative unit. Then Statehood was officially conferred on 1 December 1963.

Tripura

Tripura is the third smallest state in India. Agartala is its capital. Tripura shares a common boundary with Assam and Mizoram on the north-east and is bounded by Bangladesh in the north, west and south. Tripura was a princely state at the time of British rule. In 1949,the state became a part of independent India.
