The Nair family at Ajanta Caves. See how beautifully green the mountainside looks!

The Deccan region of India has been inhabited since the Early Bronze Age. In the 3rd century BC, during the reign of the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, Buddhism made its appearance in the Deccan. From the 2nd century BC onwards, cave excavations began in the area, resulting not only in the glorious World Heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora, but also in hundreds of other caves.

Dharma chakra mudra

Mudras (hand expressions) are widely used when sculpting human forms. While the common mudras involve placing the palms open and the index finger touching the thumb, at times we find different mudras being used.

The dharma chakra mudra is one such. One of the ideas it denotes is the union of method or Upaya and wisdom or Prajna
For the original Buddha, he was the Mahayana (the vehicle) who having attained wisdom, conveyed it to listeners, some of whom went on to become realisers themselves.

A form of union that he had experienced.

There are other ways to decipher the mudra as well, when you visit, do ask about them

This finely etched panel tells the story of Ramayana, the epic that describes the life of the young prince, his marriage and subsequent banishment to the jungle. Here he is forced to go into battle with the terrible demon king, Ravan. In this effort, he is aided by an army of monkeys.

At the end of the story, Rama wins the war, Ravan is killed and Rama is welcomed back to his kingdom, Ayodhya. You can see some of the details in the stone. The monkeys are clearly shown. Rama's early feats of bravery and his coronation take a little effort to understand.
