Discovered in the 1880s in Tibet, the Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) is the only alpine crane species in the world, roaming the high Trans-himalayas - from Eastern Ladakh and Tibet to Bhutan and Arunachal.
Known for their grace, resilience and immense cultural significance, the State Bird of Ladakh was the last species of crane discovered and described by ornithologists due to the remoteness of their natural habitat range.
