TAKTOK MONASTERY FESTIVAL ( TESHU )
Many of the monasteries in Ladakh organize the Teshu once a year and is usually a two day affair. The main attraction of these festivals is the " Cham's", masked dance with colorful and elaborate costumes. The dancers dance to stories from Tibetain Buddhism. We were honored to witness the festival at Taktok Monastery, around 50 kms from Leh, as part of our Ladakh trip in August.

Buffalo Fight - Torajan Death Ceremony
One of my favourite travel experiences till date was the trip to the Toraja Region of Sulawesi island in Indonesia. Although the Torajan people ( tribe ) are mostly Protestant ( 70%) and Catholic ( 16%) they still hold on to some of the animist traditions of their ancestors.
The Torajan death ceremony is quite unique and since death is considered as a passing over to the other world by the Torajans, the sendoff for the dead has to be with a big celebration. The dead body is embalmed and kept in the house for upto two years till the deseased family collects the required amount for the ceremony. Then the entire village is called and many pigs and buffalos are sacrificed for feasts and distribution as part of the ceremony which can last upto a week.
Since giving a big death ceremony is also considered as a status symbol some of the wealthier families have buffalo fight by prize buffalos which are reared only for fights.
UZBEK FOOD
Uzbekistan is a meat lovers paradise. Some of the best Kebabs i have had was in Uzbekistan. They have many different kinds of kebobs ( kebabs ) made from different cuts of mutton and beef. Mutton is the most popular meat in Uzbekistan. Then you have the Pilaf or plov ( kind of a biriyani or pulav which is also very tasty but less spicy than the Indian biriyani ). Plov is the national dish of Uzbekistan.
The third item that stood out for me are mountain fruits like plum, cherry, apricot, apples, and prunes which were one of the juiciest and tasty i have ever had.
And last but not least, " Tomatoes ". Without the slightest bit of doubt, i have never had such big, tasty, and juicy tomatoes ever. Many people there eat it raw as a fruit (I had a few too ). They also use is as the main ingredient is their most common salad ( tomatoes, cucumber and onion ) to go along with the pilaf or kebab.
