Masai Mara - Cheetah dragging its kill
Cheetahs are the fastest land mammal (for short sprints). They spend so much energy in the run while hunting, they just spend more time recovering post the hunt. This is an vulnerable time for the Cheetah. Any other predator like Leopard, Lions, Hyenas and African wild dog gets the wind of the kill, will try to snatch it away from the Cheetah. With a cub besides the whole equation changes. She has to protect herself, cub and the kill.
Look how she drags the kill to a safe place all the while she was panting so much.

Tips and Techniques for Beginners in Macro Photography | Part 8
Macro world, the realm of the small, has so much to offer. Interesting things that transpire in the life in the undergrowth often go unseen. Capturing this interesting behaviour of these miniscule creatures of the forests is another way of enhancing your macro photography. The images you make will tell a story and capture the attention of the viewer.
Some tips to help you make better images:
🐞Understand your subject - Be it a frog, a reptile, an insect or a spider, learning about them can help you anticipate their behavioural traits and incorporate them into your images.
🐞Have patience - When you encounter a subject, after the initial few images, wait to see if the subject displays any interesting behaviour that can be captured. This is very important. No point in going shutter crazy by moving from one subject to another.
🐞Ensure good shutter speed - Most of the behaviour of these little creatures will be quite rapid. Be ready to freeze the moment. So, depending on the lighting conditions, ensure good ISO to bring in a good shutter speed.
🐞Ensure good lighting - If natural light is not sufficient, supplement it with flash or torch light.
🐞Stability of the camera is very important.
🐞Have patience, anticipate and click

Tips and Techniques for Beginners in Macro Photography | Part 6
Macro photography has a way of making ordinary things look extraordinary. It shifts our perspective on the world and the subjects we shoot, it makes mundane things seem fascinating and amazingly cool. The mysterious realm of the small is so fascinating that this genre opens up a whole new world of exciting photo opportunities.
Before we get into the details of the various gear required for macro photography, let’s start with some perspectives and compositions that can be employed to make your macro images stand out and to make an impact. This part is critical in making a great image, perhaps even more than the gear being used.
🐞Macro is the realm of tiny things. Thus, getting up close and personal with the subjects (while ensuring the subject in not disturbed) is a great way of bringing out the finer details which otherwise go unappreciated when seen through the naked eye.
🐞Do not hesitate to get down and dirty. Always good to be at the eye-level of your subject.
🐞Ensure stability of your camera
🐞Use high aperture values to ensure that most part of your subject is in focus (values above f/11 work well, however, f/20 and above can also be used in extreme situations)
🐞Use Auto-focus to gather the initial focus and then use the manual focus override to fine-tune it. This is very critical.
🐞Make your image.

Capturing Bird Behaviour
We talked about making great portrait images of birds in our last post. Although, getting a clean and crisp portrait is essential and wonderful, however, capturing the varied behaviour of our amazing winged friends is far more interesting and challenging.
Birds are such lively creatures with so many different behavioural traits like courtship, mating display, feeding, squabbling, to name a few. Freezing those wonderful, unique moments is the next step in bird photography.
This is more a test of patience than a photographic technique. Albeit that, here are a few tips to help you make the best of the situation:
🐦Use a bean bag or tripod to stabilise your camera and lens. Handholding the equipment and waiting for the moment to transpire might be difficult
🐦Keep observing the bird or birds. The wonderful moments happen in a flash. Be ready and watchful.
🐦Ensure you have a good fast shutter speed to freeze the moment. Balance the ISO and Aperture to achieve the same
🐦Be on Auto-focus Continuous (Servo) and ‘Continuous shooting mode’ to take a burst of shots
🐦Anticipate and start clicking

Tips and Techniques for Beginners in Bird Photography | Part 2
Birdwing’s trove of knowledge on photography tips and techniques. We will be covering a lot of information across the different genres of nature photography. Look us up for pointers on best equipment and tips on photographic techniques that will help you on the field.
This week lets look at a smaller but yet very sharp lens in all the top variants (Nikon, Canon & Tamron). The fast 70-200 F2.8 lens. Though this lens is considered more for portraiture and general wildlife photography (mammals), it can also be used for bird photography with little bit of an extra effort by the user. This lens delivers some amazing bokeh when the subject is shot with a clean background, hence this lens is favourite among most portrait photographers. It also works well in low light because of the wider aperture of F/2.8. Most of our wildlife sightings happen during the dawn and dusk, this lens comes very handy in such conditions. Although the focal length is very short for photographing birds, but, one can slowly approach by foot to get close to a cooperating bird or use a 1.4x TC to gain additional focal length. The TC is just an additional optics that can be introduced to increase the focal length. For instance, in this case, you will get 200mm * 1.4x = 280mm focal length. If your body has a crop factor of 1.5x then your virtual focal length becomes 420mm while your actual focal length is still 200mm on a 70-200mm f2.8.
The result with a TC might not be great, but is a good start for an amateur. Here are few images shot with this lens (also with TC combination). If you are on a good camera body, crop the image further to make it more presentable.

We have received multiple queries requesting tips on wildlife photography. Birdwingopedia series aims at providing tips and techniques on nature and wildlife photography. Look us up for pointers on best equipment and tips on photographic techniques that will help you on the field.
Let us look at some great lens options. First up - 300mm f/4 (Nikon or Canon)- We just love this lens. It is extremely sharp, lightweight and its insanely compact size and weight make it a complete joy to use and possibly the perfect travel telephoto lens, especially if you are limited on space. This is a fantastic lens for bird photography with or without the 1.4x Teleconverter and pairs extremely well with a crop body like a Nikon D500 (7D Mark II for Canon). This lens doubles up as a wonderful option for butterfly photography too.
Take a look at some of the images shot by us using the 300 f/4 (an older version of the Nikon lens).

Females Rule The Roost Here
The iconic macho male Lion is traditionally awarded the title “King of the Jungle”, but a quick look behind the scenes will show you that in reality it is the influential matriarch, the alpha female Lion, who rules the pride and keeps Leo in his place.
Truth be told, she multi-tasks extremely well, (like most females?) combining her tender maternal instincts with the necessary degree of ruthless determination she needs to safeguard her off-spring and contribute to the food-security of her pride. The Tiger-mother and Cheetah mothers too assume total responsibility of feeding and teaching the cubs to hunt and survive.
The Leaf-cutter bee and Paper wasp females also work together to build the nest and feed and protect the young.

Cute furballs
These Lion cubs less than 3-4 months old were such a cutie's. With his milk tooth still developing the mischevious one was trying to irritate another cub by biting him. He didn't bother this fella a bit.

Leopard in the plains of Mara
Leopards are stealthy, agile, and elusive of all the big cats. Everyone loves to watch them in action. One such safari in Mara, we had the chance to see this leopard (mother) with two small cubs somewhere in the bush was trying to hunt.
So, when they are on a hunt, they twitch their tail as the latch their eyes on the prey. That is one such behavior of this cat.
If you're wondering whether the hunt was successful, no it was a failed hunt. They rely on stealth than speed, so the ground was plain with nothing to hide, so the prey got aware of this danger and ran away.
