From The IFA Archive | Nobina Gupta—Archives and Museums: 2020-2021

Nobina Gupta examined the stories and practices of the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW) through the project Jol-a-bhumi r Golpo Katha / Stories of the Wetland. In collaboration with the People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI), the project encouraged children from the EKW to document their experiences using digital storytelling. The outcomes included podcasts, illustrations, and photo-stories, which were added to the PARI website, highlighting the wetlands' ecological and cultural significance.

This project was made possible with part-support from Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi.

This and many more projects are currently available at our in-house Archive (open to visitors!) in Bangalore and online at www.theifaarchive.org

We are deeply saddened to know of the passing of Shyam Benegal, one of the greatest filmmakers of our times. Shyam had been a part of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation from 2001 to 2010. He was also a member of the Programme Committee and later became a Patron of IFA. He was instrumental in steering the way forward for the institution critically, but also very thoughtfully.

We will forever be grateful for his generosity and guidance to us. His honest, nuanced films will remain as his legacy, and so will his conversations and wisdom.

In our December Project Showcase@IFA, Nalini Balakumar and her mother Vanitha shared their experiences from their project Heirloom Samplers: Experimental Embroidery of Emotions, implemented under the Explorations category of the Arts Practice programme at India Foundation for the Arts (IFA).

Their project explored knitting and embroidery as tools for healing, focusing on the intergenerational trauma of Dalit-Christian life in Tamil Nadu. Through intimate mother-daughter conversations and fabric experiments like cyanotype and cross-stitch, they examined themes of identity, casteism, and trauma. The project blended art, history, and memory, incorporating oral histories and textile-based practices to address deeply personal and collective experiences.

Nalini, an artist based in Mysuru, uses inter-media practices such as photography, cyanotype, and textile art to explore family history, memory, and trauma. Her collaborator and mother, Vanitha, shares an interest in reflecting on psychosocial geographies and lived experiences through art.

The session also featured a conversation with Shobha Talengala, an art historian interested in visual anthropology and material cultures. Shobha is currently working on the collections of Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion in Mysuru.

These Foundation Projects implemented by IFA under the Arts Practice programme are made possible with support from the Sony Pictures Entertainment Fund.

This session is part of Project Showcase@IFA, a series of online presentations to showcase and engage audiences with the diverse projects we support across programmes.

From The IFA Archive | Parshati Dutta—Arts Research: 2018-2019

Through this grant, Parshati examined the impact of chronic violence on the cultural landscape in Kashmir that has been reduced to a disrupted space, where life has been inflicted with chronic violence that besets it on a daily basis. She explored how how heritage impacts the identities and values of communities in times of conflict. The project breaks away from the ‘well-known’ and delves into the lesser-known spheres of Kashmir. The project culminated in a photobook and an essay.

This grant was made possible with support from Titan Company Limited.

The photobook is currently available at our in-house Archive (open to visitors!) in Bangalore and more such projects online at www.theifaarchive.org

*Request for Proposals: Seminars under the Arts Practice programme*

Deadline: January 31, 2025

IFA invites proposals for Seminars in the Assamese language that seek to create situations which foster exchange and dialogue, and debate artistic questions in the language. We hope to see proposals which bring together artists and practitioners from various disciplines to open up their creative processes and engage in dialogues where they can explore and learn from each other’s experiences, build knowledge, generate insights, and expand arts practices. We especially want to know - what is the existing landscape of art or cultural practices in the present socio-cultural and political context of Assam, and how can we foreground the artist's voice in the discourse on art?

From The IFA Archive | Mandeep Singh Raikhy—Arts Practice: 2017-2018

Through this grant, Mandeep Raikhy engaged with LGBTQIA+ organisations, venues and spaces across the country (mainly Kochi, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Mumbai, and Kanpur) to open up discursive spaces on the topic of sexuality and desire which are often considered taboo in India. The conversation he hosted also dealt with subjects like image, gaze, interpretation, performance, spectatorship and emotions, and aimed at developing a nuanced understanding of gender and sexuality.
