Project Showcase@IFA | Heirloom Samplers: Experimental Embroidery of Emotions with Nalini Balakumar and Vanitha | December 18, 2024
In our December Project Showcase@IFA, Nalini Balakumar and her mother Vanitha shared their experiences from their project Heirloom Samplers: Experimental Embroidery of Emotions, implemented under the Explorations category of the Arts Practice programme at India Foundation for the Arts (IFA).
Their project explored knitting and embroidery as tools for healing, focusing on the intergenerational trauma of Dalit-Christian life in Tamil Nadu. Through intimate mother-daughter conversations and fabric experiments like cyanotype and cross-stitch, they examined themes of identity, casteism, and trauma. The project blended art, history, and memory, incorporating oral histories and textile-based practices to address deeply personal and collective experiences.
Nalini, an artist based in Mysuru, uses inter-media practices such as photography, cyanotype, and textile art to explore family history, memory, and trauma. Her collaborator and mother, Vanitha, shares an interest in reflecting on psychosocial geographies and lived experiences through art.
The session also featured a conversation with Shobha Talengala, an art historian interested in visual anthropology and material cultures. Shobha is currently working on the collections of Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion in Mysuru.
These Foundation Projects implemented by IFA under the Arts Practice programme are made possible with support from the Sony Pictures Entertainment Fund.
This session is part of Project Showcase@IFA, a series of online presentations to showcase and engage audiences with the diverse projects we support across programmes.
