10th Anniversary Shenanigans (Part 3)
One of the most painful things about being a service provider is dealing with ‘bad customers’ - and you cant escape it if you run a business! I managed a group of Ivy League alumns some years ago. They wanted me to trip lead because I was the (educated) founder of a company (& not some junior employee). But it bothered them that I behaved like an equal. As the trip went by I could see a ridiculous attitude develop - entitlement! From being late, to trying to bribe, bitchy groupies of the cool vs the uncool and talking down - they behaved like the world existed to serve them - because they paid for the trip! That was the first and the last time they travelled with me. I’ve noticed this sense of superiority with some wealthy & upper caste folks too.
And that’s why I love my ‘clients of choice’ - runners!
There were some (external) incidents on our 2016 Berlin Marathon trip & stress and exhaustion of a runner losing her passport, money & bib and some other things left me with a horrible migraine. As I threw up the second time I wondered if I was die in my hotel room no one would even know! I sent a message to Ash N & Vaishali Kasturae, who were on that trip as my clients, ‘informing’ them that I felt unwell and if I didn’t surface by 6 pm they should check on me. They came over to my room and dragged me to their room and ashok made me some super pick me up tea! Since then, whether I visit him or we are on a trip, tea is on him (insider secret - he makes great chai ;p)!
In 2022, I was sick on NY Marathon Day. I was under a lot of emotional & mental stress and that day I was also physically out. I apologised to our clients that I wasn’t felling 100% and I felt bad about not being my enthusiastic self. After run one of the hardest marathons ever, one of them messaged to ask what he could get me from the pharmacy?
I remember cleaning up the mess from the cake & pizza party in the hotel lobby after London Marathon (because I could never feel entitled about messing up a lobby just because we are their clients!) & Kavitha Reddy stayed back to help me without my ever having to ask. These small things never escape me, & I can come up with many more names and stories of clients who are kind, compassionate and down-to-earth.
Over the years I have managed Marathon clients whose wealth, education, social and corporate status would outshine most ivy-leaguers! But despite it, they’ve retained their humility. Because running is a great equaliser.
And anyway class doesn’t come from going to a fancy college... just sayin

10th Anniv Shenanigans!
(PART 2)
2024 is actually Active Holiday Company’s 11th year of operation but the reason I consider 2014 as year 1 of business is that in 2013 we had only 2 clients! Entrepreneurship is a hard, long & lonely road and my frustration led to self-doubt many times. I have spent nights dejected, wondering if I was on the right path. One September evening in 2017 when I’d been number crunching Uday Jayaram hurt his leg and I had to call my cousin Raghavendra to take him to the hospital (I didn’t drive then!) After we returned home, Raghu stayed back for a drink as I whined about the business numbers. I had been running AHC for 5 years & I didnt have the capacity to draw even 10% of my market value salary.
Uday never wanted to be part of my work but he listened to all my work rants. That evening too he listened as I complained about how the dots were not connecting! Then he quietly asked:
‘Isn’t this the Berlin Marathon weekend? How many runners is AHC taking to Berlin this year?’
’Sixty something!’ I said
‘You have 60 runners and you are sitting here?’ He remarked.
‘I've sent the team to handle things’
‘The point is this: you are so busy focussing on what you don’t have that you are not paying attention to what you have!’
It was like a spear through my heart, I didn't sleep that night. The next morning I booked my flights and I was on my way to Berlin!
It was Thursday - an Air Berlin strike combined with bad weather resulted in complete chaos. My flight was rerouted to Munich and there were 100s waiting to get to Berlin. I'd been travelling for hours already. I checked the next flight to Berlin and marched to the boarding gate. I told the staff that I wanted to get Berlin but as expected the flight was overbooked. Sometimes I am so thankful to be a travel professional who understands how things work. I politely told the guy at the counter:
‘I am not going to disturb you. I will just stand here & wait quietly. But I know many flights are delayed & cancelled and I know there will be people who'll miss their connection. When that ONE seat that becomes available, PLEASE put me on it!' (brownie points - I have no checked in baggage)
A runner from China who'd also missed his flight was watching me do my thing and he came up to me & said in broken English ‘Can you please help me as well, I am going for the marathon!’
It was not up to me but my guess was that at least 5-6 seats would become available last minute. He called his friend from another boarding gate, someone else joined and soon there were a few of us. And we ALL got on the flight!
I landed just in time for our welcome party on Friday.
The race day weather was crap that year and it was going to be a Bekele and Kipchoge face-off year but the weather got to Bekele and he pulled out of the race (I was rooting for him).
There are many things I learnt that weekend. That those on the outside sometimes see things much better than we on the inside do. That destiny tests us with hurdles. That nothing could replaced my joy of being there. That I can't do everything for everyone but I can do what I can do, just like others - who do what they can do!

10th Anniv Shenanigans!
Our very 1st Marathon Tour was to London in ‘14! We had 10 runners & PS was one of our first few clients. I attributed his enthusiasm to it being his first marathon but he was also excited about our new company! Later I learnt that he was a 2nd gen entrepreneur of a well known company & though he had a second home in LON he stayed with us!
His humility became obvious when he ran his first race in a bit over 3hrs! I was at the finish line with a beer bottle in hand. He stepped back & refused it with folded hands. That evening, when we spoke about running addiction was when I learnt that he’d replaced alcohol with running in his life!
He ran just one marathon a year: London! As someone who knew the city & the race better, he’d take over Trip Leading, joking that he must be the only client who pays & provides services
The 2nd year, he hit an amazing 2.50-something & I fixed a call with him & a journo. He told me how much he hated being seen in the media but that he’d speak to them for me! He did things like that
One year, his father passed away days before the race. PS cancelled his trip. Then 2 days before the race he called & said he was on his way to LON. I still had his room. The race was emotional, he finished in tears & I cried with him, remembering that my own first HM was days after my father passed
I think PS was probably one of the first few people I called when we became profitable in 2019! His joy couldn’t be more sincere. The best part of every LON trip for me was getting to spend time with him. All meal times were reserved with him discussing all sorts of things!
Around COVID somethings changed & he gave up running. I think of him time & again. I miss him at every LON Marathon. I miss him when I hear the guy strumming a guitar on the Thames. I miss him when I see a vegan pizza on the menu
I often wonder how far I could have gone without the support & belief of people like him. My clients. My people. My shining stars. I thank God for making my work my destiny. For giving me love for my work. For resilience to stay in it, even though I bled for 7 long years. For giving me clients who are a pure embodiment of love

Mahasweta Ghosh's journey with running is transformational and running has become an integral part of her life, propelling her to accomplish incredible feats. With over 60 races under her belt, including 35 half marathons, 11 full marathons, and many ultramarathons, Mahasweta has pushed herself to new limits and embraced challenges with unwavering determination.
We have the privilege of sharing Mahasweta Ghosh's inspiring story in her own words.-“From originally weighing 80 kg to now 51 kg, my journey with running has been transformational. Running has become a big part of my life; I've completed over 60 races, including 35 half marathons, 11 full marathons, and many ultramarathons.
I am a proud finisher of the toughest foot race on earth- The 37th edition of Marathon Des Sables.
Running 256km across 7 days in the Moroccan Sahara is an incredible accomplishment. It's even more impressive considering that the race is fully self-supported, meaning you had to carry your own food, fuel, and gear for the entire duration of the event.
Each of the 6 stages of the race is like a separate race in itself, and with 1085 participants, only 671 managed to finish. The Marathon Des Sables is not just a race; it's an indescribable experience that goes beyond words.
Running has not only changed my physical appearance, but it has also had a profound and lasting effect on my mental outlook.”

Kavitha's Extraordinary World Marathon Journey: Amsterdam to Tokyo.
Join us as we delve into the incredible journey of Kavitha, a dedicated marathon runner whose WMM adventure began with a qualifying timing at the Amsterdam Marathon for the renowned Boston Marathon in 2016. With unwavering focus, determination, and relentless dedication, Kavitha set out to conquer each World Marathon Major and earned her coveted Six Star medal.
Discover Kavitha's inspiring story in her own words
“The World Marathon Journey started when I first got qualifying timing for the Boston Marathon in 2016 at the Amsterdam Marathon. The journey was an experience for my focus and determination to better myself with each world marathon major and I could with all my hard work, consistency and dedication .
I started the World Majors with NYC Marathon in 2017 , then came Boston in 2018( I went back again in 2022) , Berlin(2018), London (2019), Chicago (2019) and had to wait good 3 years for the Last and final one at Tokyo because of Covid restrictions and finally earned the Six star medal this year at Tokyo Marathon.
Did 3 World marathon majors with Active Holidays and I must say the best experience I got from all the three. The hotel locations and the energy Gauri gives the participants is incredible and missed her presence hugely at Tokyo this year😊
Each one of this world marathon major has been an experience in itself.. I can talk endlessly about the unforgettable stories I have from each. Made life time memories!!!
The journey continues post Six ⭐️.. I continue to do the same as long as my body supports it. The immediate next is to cover all the continents- walking in this direction. I am doing the Antarctica Ice Marathon in December and hopefully the other two continents ( South America, Africa) in the coming future.”

In a world where adversity tests the limits of our determination, Ankush Saha stands as a shining example of resilience and unwavering spirit. Born prematurely and facing mild brain damage, Ankush's path seemed destined for challenges. Yet, his love for athletics ignited a fire within him that refused to be extinguished.
𝐀𝐧𝐤𝐮𝐬𝐡'𝐬 𝐚𝐰𝐞-𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 🌟
“I was mildly brain damaged from being born preterm, yet I fell in love with athletics at a young age. I overcame obstacles in my ability to understand direction, distance, time, speed, and pace to become a dual-sport athlete with the help of my parents, who also served as my coach and mentor. I competed in golf and won a silver medal at the 2019 Special Olympics World Games.
I have also run six half-marathons and four full marathons. In the 2018 Twin Cities Marathon in Minnesota, I finished in 3 hours and 54 minutes, which is a personal best. I am passionate about encouraging children with disabilities to participate in sports and lead healthy lives, and I want to encourage others to push through challenges and accomplish their objectives..
Despite being told that I might never walk, I am now proud to be an international sports person and an example of what determination and hard work can achieve”

Lata shares her World Majors story...
Lata or Neeru Bajaj as some know her, is a known face as a podium finisher at many races and here she is speaking about the journey to the six star medal which has given her purpose and has been her goal. Sunita Tummalapalli Shares her WMM Story
Sunita Tummalapalli was amongst the first few runners to sign up for a WMM race with us, way before Indian runners became aware of the World Marathon Majors. She is amongst the first Indian women to have grabbed the six star medal and she is also one of the very few to have run on all 7 continents (of which Antarctica was with Active Holiday Company we are proud to say). Here she shares her journey to adding the big medal to her cupboard.
Adil Nargolwala is already sporting his six star medal
The bug for chasing the World Majors bit Adil Nargolwala a tad bit earlier than the rest of the running pack in India. And in this story (like in many others) there's a woman behind it all.. ;) - thank you for travelling with Active Holiday Company Adil..
If you are more than a spectator on your journeys then you’ve come to the right place. Active Holiday Company is South Asia’s leading provider of International running, cycling, and walking tours.
It all started when a bunch of runners signed up with us to travel to London Marathon in 2014. Since then we have carved our niche in the travel industry making active travel a new way to travel.
From running a marathon at sub-zero temperatures in the Antarctica to climbing to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the reason that we are so good at this is simple: We’ve walked the less trodden path for decades, painstakingly refining every experience revolving it around just one thing - our travellers.
Why Active Holidays?
When you choose to explore Tuscany on a bicycle, you are in fact signing up to accessing and connecting with it in ways that no other travel style can allow you to, you sign up for meeting Tuscany. Personally. You sign up to witnessing the everyday lives of the locals, stopping to sip that cappuccino (or wine) at that quaint local café along the route, that’s not on the list of any big tour company. You sign up for staying in small boutique properties, instead of a big chain hotel, where you’ll probably discuss weather and politics with the native family who’ve probably owned the place for generations.
Or take for example, our hike along the UNESCO Heritage Wachau Valley in Austria which takes you on roads less travelled, to the stunning scenery of rolling hills, pretty villages and vineyards. Of course, you’ll tuck in the highlights and the must-sees but you’ll do more than your neighbours who did their run-of-the-mill trip, we promise. We’ll lend our expertise to the perfect trip. The pace will be yours, as will be the extra-ordinary experiences.
Most of our trips are designed with explorers in mind and majority of our trips need the mindset, not always the muscle. But hey, if you want to feel like an endurance athlete climbing peaks, breaking personal records at an international marathon course or skiing cross country – we’ve got plenty of action for you. Get packing.
