SAGA DAWA FESTIVAL @ MT.KAILASH. The most important month in the Tibetan lunar calendar is Saga Dawa, the 4th lunar month which runs from May 23rd up until June 22nd, 2020. The 15th day of this lunar month, the full moon day, is called Saga Dawa Düchen (Düchen means “great occasion”). In 2020, Saga Dawa Düchen falls on Friday, June 5th. This day is the single most important holy day of the year for Tibetan Buddhists , the festival celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha Sakyamuni, who attained Buddhahood at the age of just 35. On his death, Buddha instructed his followers to follow his teachings to honor and celebrate his Parinirvana to Heaven, instead of mourning his death.

The starting point of the 3 day parikrama around Mount Kailash is the Yama Dwar or The Gates of the Lord of Death. Yama (lord of death), who brings mortal souls to his haven and make judgment of one's merit & sin, then release for onward cosmic journey. It is said, the real enter from this gate can be made after emancipating the soul from mortal world. 'Dwar' means gate. Symbolically, the Kailash region is likened to the divine world, separate from Earth. To enter this region, one must abandon the mortal self and hence pass through the Yama Dwar, so he reaches Lord Shiva, as a pure being. It is said that, once you have reached here, you are in Kailash and equivalent to have performed the Parikrama.
The journey around Mount Kailash takes three days and covers approximately 42 kilometres. We begin at an elevation of 4700 metres (15,500 feet), climb up towards the Diraphuk to Zuthulphik via Dolma La Pass at an elevation of 19500 feet and descend into Zongzerbu at an elevation of 4900 metres (16000 feet). Thereafter it is an easy walk back to Darchen.

Lying under the south face of Mount Kailash, the extreme spot of the Nandi inner Parikrama is the grand Saptarishi Cave, which is considered to be one of the most difficult treks during the inner Parikrama. Saptrishi- 7 sages from ancient India who were super learned with the ocean of knowledge and blessed with heavenly powers. They possessed the mastery of Astras(weapon mastery) and each Saptrishi represents a Tatva ( basic elements like spirit, fire, water, stone, nature, sky and air). Saptrishis were blessed with superpowers and were able to travel between Lokas and communicate with Devas and Lord Vishnu-Supreme king of 3 lokas.The Saptrishi Caves are located at a great elevation of approximately 6000 metres. The Saptrishi caves are located at a distance of 11.3 km away from Darchen’s camp.
