Previously known as South Parade in the days before independence, the vibrant thoroughfare was renamed Mahatma Gandhi Road on February 26, 1948, honoring the iconic leader. Today, commonly referred to as M.G. Road, it pulses with the constant hum of activity. This bustling artery of the city is a dynamic blend of old and new, where retail stores, bustling food outlets, and cozy restaurants line one side, inviting locals and tourists alike to indulge in their offerings. Alongside these are modern office buildings and historic theatres, creating a lively mosaic of commerce and culture that makes M.G. Road a microcosm of the city’s spirit and history.

In the rich tapestry of Indian mythology, the tale of King Hiranyakashipu, his devout son Prahalad, and the demon aunt Holika captures the essence of Holi. Granted a boon making him invincible to humans and animals, the king demanded worship from all. Yet, Prahalad’s unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu challenged this. In a sinister plot, Holika lured Prahalad into a fiery pyre, shielded by a cloak meant to protect her from flames. But divine intervention saw a gust whisk the cloak onto Prahalad, safeguarding him and turning Holika to ashes. This miraculous survival is celebrated as Holika Dahan, a symbol of the eternal victory of faith and goodness over malevolence.

The evening of this festival resonates with the powerful chants of “Om Namah Shivay,” creating a sacred atmosphere across India. This festival, celebrated from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu, showcases diverse traditions and devout practices. Devotees engage in melas, all-night vigils (jagratas), and day-long fasts to connect with Lord Shiva, offering belpatra, dhatura, milk, and sweets. Believed to dispel darkness and ignorance, the festival’s significance is rooted in ancient texts like the Skanda Purana, Linga Purana, and Padma Purana, embodying a nationwide devotion to Lord Shiva.

BEFORE and AFTER

The Bull Temple in Bangalore, established by Kempe Gowda in 1537, is dedicated to Nandi, the divine bull of Lord Shiva. Featuring a massive statue of Nandi carved from a single rock, the temple is a historical and religious landmark in the Basavanagudi area. It also hosts the annual ‘Kadalekai Parishe’ (Groundnut Fair), attracting devotees and celebrating local traditions.

In 1585 after the Chieftain of Bangalore, Kempegowda 2, came to power, he established a watchtower at a notable rock formation as part of a strategic network to define and protect the city’s boundaries. This tower was one of several key points set up around the city, each positioned to be visible from the others, creating an early warning system. The tower at this rock formation, in particular, played a critical role in this defensive setup. Sentries stationed there would sound a bugle and light a torch, known as “panju” in the local language, as signals. These signals served multiple purposes: they reassured the city’s residents of their safety, acted as a deterrent to potential invaders, and functioned as an alert system during enemy attacks. The tower, spanning an area with rock formations similar to those found at a well-known botanical garden in the city, featured cavities in its rocks where lamps were placed, serving as a beacon. This watchtower was a key element in the city’s early security and communication system.

According to Hindu mythology, Vasant Panchami marks a significant event related to the creation of the universe. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Saraswati, who is revered as the deity of knowledge, music, arts, science, and technology, came into existence. The legend narrates that after Lord Brahma created the world, he visited Earth only to find it enveloped in a profound silence that signified the solitude of its beings. Disheartened by this, Lord Brahma sprinkled some water from his kamandalu (water pot), leading to the divine emergence of a goddess holding a veena (a stringed musical instrument). He then asked this goddess to use her music to dispel the silence and loneliness that pervaded the world. This goddess was none other than Saraswati, who from then onwards was worshipped as the patroness of music, arts, and learning. Consequently, Vasant Panchami began to be celebrated in honor of Goddess Saraswati, marking a day of cultural and spiritual importance where music and learning are revered.

For that candle night dinner in the comfort of your own room…
Swipe left, to see the same space in the morning.
When my infant was fast asleep, and I couldn’t step out, this was the best way to make use of the spacious room!

Cozy spaces to relax outdoors..
One of the best part about staying in this place was that you have a lot of space for yourself not just in the rooms but outdoors as well. The rooms are well spaced out and you find yourself being in privacy even when the place is running on full occupancy.

Just the place to be on a calm starry night...
We visited this place in January this year, when the COVID situation around us was beginning to settle down. I didn’t want to stay at a crowded place or be in close vicinity to other guests. This place fit the bill! Although there were other guests staying at the property, we hardly ever saw them. The rooms are spread apart and having just 9 of them, you know you have all the privacy in a 200 acre plantation stay!

The drive to Wayanad....
Took us about 7hrs! Of course you can easily do it in 5hrs, but we took our time since it was the first long drive away for the baby from home. One long break at the Kamat Mysore for lunch, and then a small stop at the sanctuary where we spotted elephants (mom and calf!)on route to

The grand 140 years old bungalow!
Exactly the kind of place I love, and where we stayed. Beautifully furnished with antiques, this bungalow has been restored with family heirlooms and hand picked colonial furniture. It is spacious too, and exactly what you want, when you are on a holiday with a baby.

Have you stayed in a tree house ?
I haven’t. But there are 2 at the plantations. Built 40 ft above the ground level on giant jackfruit trees, it’s a luxurious accommodation with great views!

Surrounded by lush greenery 🌿
My kind of vacation. After a year of not travelling anywhere, the one place I would choose to get surrounded by, is any place that has lots and lots of green space.
is a 200 acre estate, surrounded by tropical rainforests of Wayanad.
